Hi,

So last night....after being with Afrihost for 2 weeks...came home and my internet/ADSL was dead. Tried calling them....but there lines were hectic. Called back an hour later....and they stopped taking calls...had a message about sending an sms for help...and someone will call back later. Was not amused at all.

Now, this AM I sent their support a mail about the problem. My question is...how do you know if the problem is on the ISP side (Afrihost) of if the Telkom ADSL connection got stuffed, and thats why the line is down? Im a bit of a noob when it comes to this...but as I understand it...you connect to your ADSL exchange....then it goes to the ISP. So with last night issue I had....how do I know (besides the high volume of calls) if the problem lies at the ISP or at the ADSL exchange/connection?

If the PPP light on your router is dead it is 95% chance it is the ISP. If the ADSL light is dead, then it is telkom.

Same problem here. PPP light out, ADSL light shining brightly. Router info page says PAP_Auth_Fail or something to that effect. Username and password correct. Axxess uncapped 384. Probably a good thing it's not working given the hate that's raining down on them in the forums....

I didnt try Afrihost website, will remember next time

Got the Telkom Mega100 route I think. I know the 2 lights on the right should be green when connected. Last night, and this AM it was the far right light that was off. The one just next to if on the left was on. So the far right one is the PPP light, and the one just to the left of it is the ADSL light? Is that right?

Im having the same problem my Adsl light is on but my interent one is off when im on my afrihost uncapped account

I am having the same problem also with Afrihost / Telkom. No idea if it's telkom or Afrihost that's the problem.

I have 3 indicator lines on the router:
1. Power
2. Network
3. DSL

1. is obviously on (or I'd know what the problem is )
2. is fine (as it connected to my wireless router via LAN cable
3. DSL light goes orange, it's normally on green.

In the DSL router I do the tests, and the connection is up. However, I cannot seem to connect ti the ISP at all.

I've literally spent hours on the phone with telkom and with Afrihost, and here are some of the conculsions I've received :
1. Afrihost (after 1 hour on the phone) swear it's either telkom or my router. There is nothing wrong from their side. They even called telkom directly for me and spent 20 minutes with telkom.
2. From Telkom - It's the ISP, their line is fine
3. From Telkom - the Tableview exchange has been down for a whole week thus no connection
4. From Telkom (yesterday) - the Tableview exchange is fine. They just did a re-sync of my line and it's OK, I must reset my router and I'm 100's.
5. From Telkom (2 days ago) - my line has been down since the 15th and there has been zero activity since the 15th.

So I've received alot of conflicting info and now have no idea what's left to do. I will try again at home with another ISP or another login for Afrihost to give it a bash and see what that does. If that doesn't fix it then it must certainly be the line (or my router).

Do you have a spare modem by any chance? If you do, then the easiest way to test if it's the line is to connect using the Telkom Guest PPPOE account. It's as simple as that. If it connects, you're line is fine then it's your ISP, no doubt. The best way to get problems like these solved, when it gets to a point where no-one can help is to prove it to the parties involved yourself.

So get a modem, steal one, borrow one- whichever way; test your line with that modem!

If these other uncapped solutions use the same setup as IS's uncapped solutions then it's like this:

When you connect your modem for the first time it connects to the ISP's auto-provisioning server which serves the modem its config. It then download to the modem and connects with your l2tp account.

If your line is down, then obviously it won't be able to connect with your account. That may also be why it gives an error like PAP_authentication_failed since the l2tp account cannot connect.

Also, remember that even though your DSL light is lit up, it does not mean that your ADSL line is working. It might still sync up to the DSLAM/exchange but it does not sync up anywhere further than the exchange.

My best bet is that it's a DSL line problem and the chances for it being Telkom is about 80%. Sometimes when you ask them to recreate the virtual port on the exchange for you, it does not work the first, second or even third time. Keep that guy on the phone until is starts working!
