Query : Does changing the DNS address help the ADSL performance.

Hi, just a question?. MWEB ssuggests in their setup instructions for DSL that you should change Primary DNS to 196.25.1.11 and Secondary DNS to 196.43.1.11 in order to improve performance. I am using a telkom marconi router and when I go to their website to amend settings I can leave DNS on auto discovery or insert user settings. I have inserted the settings above suggested by MWEB but can find no real speed difference so have gone back to auto discovery, in fact have auto discovery and user ticked at present. Has anyone elase tried this?

the only difference you could see with different dns servers would be latency based, if the one dns server is screwed and give 1000ms and high packetloss, name resolution could be slower.

generally all isp dns servers run low latency so best case scenario you would shave of 5ms ? :P

Mean Monster, In my case the obvious is required:). Is there any real point in changing settings or should I just leave it alone (If it ain't broke, don't fix it principle). I really only use ADSL for web browsing, mail etc. My son plays a few games!

I'd say both. But the PC you use only limits speed if its a really old/slow PC. Any PC on the market currently is more than capable of handling ADSL speeds.

But if your son is playing games, then it could be safe to assume that you have a decent PC. This means your PC is not limiting speed at all.

In your case, the "internet connection" should be the only factor really influencing the time to load pages.

:)

Unless you are experiencing problems of some kind, auto should be fine.

Rather leave the settings to Auto - if you have a MWEB ADSL account, chances are that "auto" assigns the ones they suggest anyway.

Thanks everyone. Will leave settings alone!

If you don't have any reason to change them, and for this, I mean, you are not running your OWN dns server, there is no need to change your settings, and the potential performance increase is so negligent it is not worth mentioning.
