Question About Adding RAM To A PC

I am looking to add RAM to an old desktop computer, but I'm not sure which one to buy. What information do I need to have before going out an purchasing some RAM?
 
You need to know what type of RAM is seated on your motherboard (DDR/DDR2 etc). You should get a free app like SIV or SIW that will tell you the type of RAM you have.
 
What PC/Motherboard do you have? Posting details always helps.
