Hi I have a simple question about the patch antenna and going to Cantenna...

Does anyone know what the patch antenna looks like inside? will it be possible for me to simply open her up, take the cable out. Make the Cantenna, Screw in the Cable from the patch antena, and Voila?

Thanks.

The patch antenna as sold by FastComm is actually the baby patch antenna from poynting.

the wire is screwed onto the receiver plate... should be rather simple to re-use.

As to opening it - It's held togther with double sided tape and a spot of sealent glue ..

Obviously you take a risk of breaking it when opening it (the casing) but don't say I didn't warn ya ;-)

Hello,

The patch antenna is easy to dismantle... just use a screwdriver to prise the important part open, then remove the cable.

Why not rather just buy a pigtail? I can supply one at R 185 (yeah... I know it's a ripoff, but I don't set the prices... I wish I did though).

That way, you're not spending upwards of R 250 just for a piece of cable...

Aaaah but what If I have already bought a very expensive *Cable*...

I bought the Patch antenna out of haste to increase my signal, call me an optimist. I thought it would magically fix all my issues I have had with international Lag and ping/latency for the last 6 years...

Anyway, now that it is aparant that the Cantenna is better, I want to go home after work tonight, rip that baby open, take her cable, put it into the all Metal Civas Regal Can, and Voila...Magically my international Lag issues are gone....

IT's a wonderfull place...my mind...that is.

*Edit* Would a Oval Shaped Can work? curiosity.

Ooh dear :-) Haste makes waste as they say.

Well, just remember your pings over MyWireless will never be all that great. It's an unfortunate thing that the latency seems to be built into the service. I'd dare to venture a guess that it will cut down on packet loss though.

PS: I hear the Barbeque flavour of pringles can gets better pings than the original flavour [8D].

As I am playing a MOGG I need to cut down on PL alot.

PL is most important.
Latency/Ping is important but anything <500 is livable.

I have noticed a significant change when I Attached the patch antenna.

Prior to Antenna :

3 Modem Lights, 15% signal.

After Antenna :
4 Modem Lights(5 Software), 21-27% Signal.

This change has actually made a big change in my gameplay as well.
Yes I know the fact that I see the green Lag lights in the game makes my mind believe all is well, and possibly all is not well...but those lights are green and im happy...(Contemplating painting green dots on my screen)

So, if the Cantenna is better than a Patch, that Would mean I would Possibly get 30%+ signal.

Last Question....probably not....

That N-Female Connector that goes into the Actual Can, how important is that to the functioning of the Cantenna?

Maybe I should pour some Chivas into the can, Add some BBQ Pringles, shake it up well. Throw out contents, BUT not wash out, to keep the flavour. then Set it up, im sure the Signal must be hungry after travelling that far....who knows, maybe the signal brings friends...[;)]

Would someone mind putting a cantenna together for me?

Of course I'll pay for the parts, supply a metal can if necessary
[I am partial to scotch] or if using a pringles can, you may keep
the contents [:D]

Any takers?

The n-Femal chassis mount isn't exactly required, it just makes for easy mounting.

You can strip the cable, and attach/solder the outer shielding copper to the can, and let the core stick thru the can at the appropriate length.

Yeah my email is kinda buggered :(

I'm connected to 36, at 20% signal and I cant play Online at all. Way to much Packet loss, so much, that when I enter major battes I just go Link Dead.

You can play the game with a 56k Modem 100%. And I have played the game with Mywireless for the first 3 weeks, just these last 2 weeks being absolutely horrible. Its not a FPS.

Well, Made the Cantenna.

Amarula Can Works wonders. Now if only it wasn't 10pm then I could get on the roof and try it there. Getting 24% signal with the Cantenna , on a good day I could get 27% with the Patch Antenna. So im Guessing the Walls, the Sliding Door, the Entertainment Centre, the Wall, the 2 Trees, and then the neighbours walls are all in the way. Tomorow comes the Exibition to get on the roof, while leaning down looking at the Monitor. FUN!

It was pretty easy, Ripped open the Patch Antenna, Stared at the little 2mm plate, and the mirror inside the patch Antenna for some time....R300..../sigh im guessing its cause of the cable.

Then take the Cable, Punch small hole in Can, Use old Patch Antenna Stand , Superglu...MORE Superglu....MORE and MORE superglu...Thats good stuff....bit high....probably could fly onto the roof now.

Put Wire through the Can, Celotape the Cable to can for some Temp Support and Look for Signal. I am now downloading from an international site at 9.9kbp's , 2.5X slower than usual. (I download from the site alot) I am also using Getright and have Accelarated downloading running. It started at 2.5kbps. where it normally starts at 9kbps. Dark Ages of Camelot (the Game I play) Is still very Packet loss heavy right now...I dont know why, makign the game unplayable. NORMALLY This isnt the case, tru I get some spikes every now and then but all and all the game plays very smooth normally...

personally I just think your timing for the testing sucks ...

Looking at my firewall logs every damn monkey with a Sentech IP is infected and nailling me !!!!

Add that to the fact that there may be a very realy technical issue concerning international bandwidth and I think you should take it easy for a couple of days.

Let the Information-Gravel-Path become the Information-Super-highway again.

I cried till I was dehydrated last night, my big pillow is very moist now.....

In this period of hysteria, I got up to go look at my new built Cantenna. Signal of 20%...so somehow it dropped 4%.

Then early today I woke up, 15% signal...the Cantenna didnt move at all. I'm pretty sure the Trees and Walls are in the same place.

With the Patch Antenna The signal never dropped below 21% and normally stayed 25%+

Anyone know what this might be? maybe I'm just beign daft...wait, most likely, I'm just being daft.

What does BER mean, Bit Error Rate ( Data Error Rate - to early to remember)The higher it is , the better? or the Lower?

[^]

Did you solder the shielding wires to the casing of the can ?

Did you check that the depth of the core wire is still correct inside the can ?

BER - many a discussion concerning this. From my testing I would say it tells you how agressive the modem's error correction routines are.... the higher it is the better ...

Maybe ProASM can give a more useful answer there.

No I did not solder anything, anywhere.

All I did was take the Cable, unscrew it from the mounting inside the Patch Antenna...it has about a 30mm unshielded piece of silver wire, below the 30mm unshielded part the shielding starts. I simply put the wire through the hole, till the shielded part about 2mm of it was inside the can, then Celotaped the wire onto the side of the can. the Unshielded wire is protruding into the can at about a straight angle, the wire has a natural curve to it , and I wasnt sure if I should or should not bend it straight, so I left the curve in it. I have the wire 1/4lo from the back of the Can, and it is sticking 32mm into the can.

If I follow the natural curve of this discussion, im guessing it is important to have soldered it, for the canetta to work efficiently....aye? before I go burn my fingers to ashes though, do I want to Solder the unshielded part , so that the cable is practically connected to the can as a whole?

BTW thanks for all the help guys...truly nice to be able to post something and get helpfull answers almost immediatly.

The distance to the back of the can should be less than lo/4. About 30mm for a 120mm can. There is a calculator somewhere (not the one below). But it doesn't make that much of a difference.

In many cases one should solder the shield wire to the casing of the object. In this case it's not a good idea. Then you'll have all the noise that's on the outside of the can running though your shield wire and making it into the modem. If the can does work the same or better, you'll loose a lot of it's directionality.

Similarly a dish does not need to be grounded to work.

Just re-check the seating of the cable. I found that if my shielding wires do NOT make contact connection is rather "off".
