Hi Guys,

Finally have ADSL installed (4mbps). I have a Thinkpad R400, although I know for a fact this wont play any decent game.

So now, time to purchase a Desktop computer, although require some assistance in choosing the right specs for the requirement.

I'm not a big gamer, but want to get back into Online Counterstrike (used to play back in the days when HzO & GoW were still around.

I'm just wondering if it's worth going for a CORE2 DUO, or if a celeron (1.8ghz) would be even sufficient for my requirement.

Secondly, I want to be able to connect my 40" LCD (FHD) to it at max resolution instead of a standard computer LCD. I know this is gfx card, although does it need to have a HDMI port? or is DVI/VGA sufficient?

Not sure what the memory standard is of today in a desktop machine which will do some gaming/ripping/surfing etc etc on a Windows XP platform.

Let me know what you guys think,

Cheers:)

Windows XP is no longer available thus bumps up your minimum specs to that of Vista, if you really must go for celeron there are dual core.

Intel ® Celeron 430 Conroe-L 1.80 GHz 512K OD Cache .065um
R100 difference to the next one
Intel ® Celeron ® Dual Core E1600 Allendale 2.40 GHz 512K OD Cache .065um
the next bump up is R100 difference between the two, it make more sense to go for the Pentium.
Intel ® Pentium ® Dual Core 5200 Wolfdale 2.5 GHz 2Mb OD Cache .045um
Only then do you get Core 2 Duo bottom range - is at R500 difference to the Dual Core
Intel ® Core 2 Duo E7300 Conroe 2.66 GHz 3Mb OD Cache .045um

Budget: looking around R3000 to R4000 max.

still got a original XP here, but yeah... if my HW i end up purchasing, can run vista / windows 7... I suppose its a big bonus

go look at the digital addiction firesale thats happening right now... there's an 8800GT for R800.. that's still a pretty great card and will run CSS at max for sure.

firesale.digitaladdiction.co.za

and RAM is rly so cheap that u should be looking at at least 2GB, I guess DDR2-800 for ur needs

CSS can be ran with onboard gfx even (badly)...but for a 40" LCD that 8800GT will be most suitable at that price.

If not a HD4670 would also be cool.

+1 for the E5200 and a lot of ram.

Then a G31 board, should roughly equal 3k or less
