Which bank should I get my first credit card with? And which one am I likely to get approved with if my only credit history is a 6-month phone contract with Telkom.

First credit card... how many are you planning to get?
Just one. I only said that to show I never had one before, therefore I'm looking for something simple that doesn't have any extras that will cost me an arm and a leg.

Depends on income and spend.

If you're spending enough on petrol, e-bucks from FNB can be good, just wait one more month to see what new partner they will get for vouchers. So the gold account, going up tiers isn't worth unless you know you're going to be hitting the reward caps, which I kind of doubt if you're only getting a credit card, rather upgrade down the line.
Otherwise go Capitec, cheapest of them if you don't manage to offset the cost with rewards.

The best option would be never getting any credit card at all and learning to live like that.

You’ll never ever find yourself in any trouble or temptation that way.

A credit card can be a great thing if you have self control. Keep your "real" money in an interest bearing account and settle your CC each month / in time to not pay interest. Places like FNB give you ebucks which do turn out to be worth it if you do spend at checkers and clicks - they are not nearly as bad as discovery when it comes to having to play their "game" to earn rewards.

It can also be useful in emergencies if you need to buy something at short notice and don't have the cash right then.

I've used credit cards since I was 18 (18 yrs ago) and have never gotten into trouble and personally I would never not have one.

Credit cards are not the problem, people without self control or common sense are the problem.

The Virgin Money card sounds perfect for you. It has no monthly fee unlike other credit cards.
