Howzit guys. I am wondering if you Linux super intellectuals can maybe enlighten me regarding libdvdcss2. When Thor came out on DVD I rented it and wanted to watch it on my laptop. It simply would not play. It would take about 5 minutes for my DVD rom to pick up that it is a video DVD and when I tried to open it with VLC or Movie Player...it would gooi a error and that was that.

Now I heard that the Thor DVD employs some kind of new CSS encryption. I take that libdvdcss2 was not able to crack it open and thats why the DVD would not play on my Linux laptop. Yesterday I was browsing some stuffs on wikipedia and came upon this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libdvdcss

now....there it shows that there is a new release of this and I actually found the .deb file to update mine as I was still on the older version that comes with Linux Mint. My question is....and I dont have the Thor DVD to test it...but does this mean perhaps that it will now be able to crack the CSS encryption found on this DVD? Is libdvdcss2 updated now and then to enable it to crack the new CSS encryptions that some of the studios insist on employing on their DVD discs? I am just curios as to how the updates for this library works. I have not really been able to find any useful info on this on the net and was hoping you guys know a bit more about it?

It is not a libdvdcss issue, but a libdvdread and libdvdnav. Here is a discussion on it and a temp fix:

Ah ok...thank you. I thought it must be libdvdcss cause that is what cracks the encryption....did not even think that the Studios would now start messing with dvdread and dvdnav things! BASTADS!

Do the linux community do updates on these libraries to fix issues like this or does it take a long long time for fixes to filter through?

From the discussion I briefly viewed it seems they are actively looking into the problem, when a fix will be available is anyone's guess.

It is not just the libdvdnav, it seems the studio did a terrible job with the authoring of the .ifo file, making it impossible to load menus and play the DVD properly. And it is not just on Linux, Windows users have been complaining about this as well.

Here is a direct link to the workaround:
