Question about MWEB, since I'm changing to them from Afrihost.

I cancelled Afrihost today, because the throttling is just plainly stupid. I used 8gb this month so far, and am throttled down to a indecisive download speed that constantly jumps from 0.00kb/sec to 19kb/sec (up and down the whole time) on a 386kb line- used Flashget to test this, where I usually get my fullconstant 34-39 odd kb/sec.

This has been going on for a couple of days now so it must be them throttling me. So I finally just cancelled it once and for all and am just wondering if MWEB will do the same to me after 8gb on a shaped account? I know there are lots of topics going around on this but I'd like to get a definite answer. By the way, can't go unshaped just yet because of finances.

These ISP's are real idiots. I use 8GB+ a month just gaming.

So we may conclusively say that real "cheapo" broadband does not exist in South Efrica. It's all a farce?
 
I was also with Afrihost and then went MWEB. No regrets at all.

To answer your question, whether you do 1GB or 200GB for the month, your experience remains the same( This is what I have experienced in the past few months ).

I had exactly the same issue. Already canceled my AH account and subscribed to MWEB.

Hope it was worth it (so far so good).

I used 487 mb a day and they decided that was excessive.:wtf:

Edit: I actually logged a support query and was told that I am being throttled since I was in the top 20% (7gb in top 20? wtf!). That was on the 19th.

No, this is MWEB's uncapped shaped offering.

MWEB shapes traffic( Mainly during the day ), but does not throttle your line speed.

The last couple of days at MWEB has been a bit of a let down for me. I moved from Afrihost for the same reason. At first I was happy with MWEB's service and speed, but lately it's been really slow. It is also not that I am using huge amounts of bandwidth, so far this month I have used 26 GB. I am going to stick it out at MWEB for another month maybe, and if things don't improve I will consider moving to WebAfrica.

I too was with Afrihost uncapped 4mb, in the beginning it was cool I got really good speed and downloaded 47gb, 72gb even 107gb in one month. Then the seacom cable fault and I was down to 12gb i noticed the following month that my 4mb line was running at 512k sometimes dropped to 384k I thought there might still be probs so I just waited it out. when I queried this with afrihost they said I was an excessive user and that I needed to pay +-R500 to upgrade to IS ADSL Express just a once off.

I didn't want too so I said no I'd rather stay with what I had could they not re-instate my 4mb line speed, nope they couldn't so i waited for the next month thinking it would b normal again btw 23GB for the previous month, my line was still 512/384 queried again and they said the "system" decides who and how much to throttle and that based on my previous usage it was limiting me in anticipation of me goin crazy on the web.

The IS Express they told me had higher ratios and actually cost R1500pm but they would cover the overhead and I could just pay the regular R495.

I ditched em went to mweb and happilly hitting 70GB+ this month, there is heavier shaping during the day but evening and weekends are all fast.

Thanks for the replies. Well, as long as I don't get shaped for 15kb/sec I'm happy. That is just absurd for my low bandwidth usage. I'm going to sign up with Mweb on the 25th, hoping for the best.
 
Don't rush into it. Mweb is shaping everything to hell at the moment, wait to see if it improves.

You know, after the last couple of days, my advice to you is: STAY THE F@CK AWAY FROM MWEB!!!
 
Stay away from mweb?

You are mental to listen to people without trying it out for yourself. Some people just have no idea about anything and expect everything to run full speed 24/7. 8gb and you are throttled. That Should be a Farking crime :eek:
 
My MWEB experience has only been positive. Sure there has been a couple of hickups along the way, but they get resolved eventually and all is good again. Do not expect these packages to behave like an uncapped, unshaped, unmetered, or unlimited account, and you'll be pleasantly surprised as to the amount of downloading you can do.

The the last four days were terrible but speeds are back to my normal mweb experience which on the whole was generally excellent.

EDIT: Can't let mweb ops think that we just emphasize the bad

Just to let you guys know as of today I'm on Mweb, and the speeds are back to normal. Soaring actually, it's faster than Afrihost ever was.
