Hi guys, I have been trying to call Vodacom this morning regarding this but no phone operator is picking up on their customer care line so i thought i might as well ask here.

What are the costs involved when i want to move my number from Vodacom to MTN?

and how long does this process take?

I think it is free. But you need to buy the new sim card from MTN and it will take up to 24 hours (This is if you dont have an outstanding account with vodacom, if this is the case you need to pay up your existing contract )

Actually, MTN is currently experiencing major problems with their network this past week or two. I ported my number from Virgin prepaid to MTN contract last wednesday and I am still waiting for my new sim to be activated. I've already received a "Welcome sms" on saturday and a "Welcome call" this morning, but I am still registered on Virgin.

The MTN SP stre that I got it from says that there is apparantly a problem with the porting system, and that there are quite a number of other people who have been waiting for over a week now.

So ideally, it is supposed to take 2-24 hours but not at the moment. Remember, that once they switch you over, you lose all the airtime you had with our old network, so I've been scraping by this past week with less than R10, I didn't want to recharge because they kept promising me that I would be switched in the next 24 hours. It's now been 120 hours!:(

If you have a contract and it's coming to the end of you 24 months then moving to another network is free. If you want to cancel a contract before 24 months you will pay heavy penalties, check with Vodacom. If you're on prepaid then it's also free and easy to do. Process is usually painless. Good luck.

Thanks guys, im moving from prepaid Vodacom to MTN contract (getting N78 if you must know)

The fact that MTN are expiriencing number porting problems is quite discouraging tho :/

Well, hopefully it's only a temporary problem and it gets resolved soon. I think that after it's sorted out they will be back in business at full strength again.
I just hope they don't bill me for this month if I haven't recieved any service from them yet.

Prepaid port to MTN costs R95, not sure about waiting time, ports normally take longer than expected and you loose all airtime, bundles, etc when porting. Remember to copy everthing to phone memory before the port goes through or you might loose your contacts.

It's free if you don't need a new sim card. In the case of Virgin to MTN/VC, you would need a new 3G sim card. So they charge you for that.

Yeah, the fact that you can buy a SIM at PnP or Checkers for under R2 doesn't count with the networks does it... :-(

Nope, coz when you are porting, you need to get a sim card that is not already registered to a number. So normal sim packs wouldn't be an option. I know, I've tried...

Interestingly, when I ported to Virgin 2 years ago, the SIM I got DID have a number associated with it which they overwrote on the system.
So it can be done - they just choose not to.
After all, if they can make 1000's of percent profit on the SIM cards why wouldn't they????

Exactly!

♪♪it's all about the money...♪♪

If companies become truly 100% customer centric, then they would go bankrupt sooner than the expiry date on a zim dollar note. It's an unfortunate fact of business :-(
