I went and bought some prepaid airtime for my modem.
I put the pin in via the dashboard and it loaded the airtime.
Normally i load airtime and then type in *111# via a normal phone and transfer to a data bundle.
What would be the difference using voice time for data or using the actual data package for data?
Is it billed differently in terms of price?

Thanks

Not sure what you mean there, airtime has a ZAR value to it regardless of what you use it for, obviously there are several things that one can use one's airtime credit for, but those things all differ in price and vary according to quantity thereof.

PS: Any reason that you buy pre-paid vouchers instead of using Internet Banking to purchase pre-paid airtime? - Internet Banking is much better IMO since one can choose an amount.

Hey Ic thanks for the reply.
I am new to prepaid, never used it before.

I Bought airtime for R110 and entered the voucher pin via Vodacom dashboard.
It then loaded the airtime and I started browsing but kept getting the following message:
"Costs are now being deducted from your call account."
i then decided to trasnfer the money into a data bundle as I thought maybe this is billing me differently to normal data as I am using voice
I did this and now the messages dont come up.
I was thinking maybe it is charging a different rate or something like that if one uses voice or data for browsing / downloading??

I didnt know one could buy airtime via Nedbank

Yes, a vastly different rate.

It uses your airtime at R2 per meg (could be a single page).

If you convert to a data bundle the cost per megabyte is significantly less.

Thanks Jola, thats what I thought.
What a rip off.
Bunch of gangsters, should be the same bloody price, used up most of the money in a short time

Again crying foul without having educated yourself. How quickly we forget...

Thanks guys got the prepaid option for R189 which does not seem all that bad, easy to use and easy to add on data, pitty about the 7.2 though but its not a train smash thanks for all your help - I downloaded Vodacom version 9.4.3 mobile connect software but which version should I flash the unit with or is that the right one?
I am assuming that the software I downloaded (70 megs) is not to flash the unit but rather dashboard software?
Thanks again

Both ABSA and FNB allow one to buy pre-paid airtime via Internet Banking, if Nedbank does not, you might want to switch banks...

If one does not buy a pre-paid data bundle, then the charge is ZAR2.00/MB, this is referred to as the [searchforum]OOBR[/searchforum].

Probably best to read this forum's FAQ thread for comprehensive info.

Not saying anyone is wrong in this thread...but the rule of thumb normally is as follows:

If you buy a bundle, it works out cheaper. The same applies to SMS bundles. The bigger the SMS bundle, the cheaper the rate per SMS. The same applies to data.

I understand that, however when the "expert" at Vodacom told me to buy airtime, just purchase prepaid R110 and change it to a bundle.
This is what I am now doing. I just thought if you add the airtime via dashboard it would see you using it for data and do it for you

Afraid not. U as the user needs to do this via either Vodacom4me website or *111# . You need to determine how much data you want and purchase that using your prepaid airtime. A system like that would merely open Vodacom up for more complaints going like this "I loaded my airtime using my dashboard, no all my prepaid airtime was converted to data and now I cant make calls!"

Therefore, it is left to the user to determine how much of his airtime he wants to use to buy a data bundle, the balance is left as a Rand value to be used for calls, sms etc.

Look again if you have nothing to add but troll all the time, *** off please. ;)
These are 2 different issues and has nothing whatsoever to do with 7.2 versus 3.6

Thanks for the kind words.

No actually the thread did spiral into questions about pre-paid. You're just covering up the fact that you already knew you needed to convert airtime to data bundles and now you are complaining about not knowing better.

I suggest you go back to Vodacom and take that issue up with the "expert" to whom you are referring, or you could read the FAQ thread...
