Hey guys, i am thinking of getting dsl when the price drop on Aug, but before that, i just need to sort out all these caps questions, THANKS to everyone who read this and replies :D

For Telkom Internet, the webpage says after your initial cap is reached, you will be put in the collective threshold option which enables you to stay online until the average usage for all subscribers reaches the collective threshold. A friend of mine has a 4mb line with a 2gb shaped acc. and he says the average usage is usually reaches on like the 19th of each month, and if your cap have not been reached by then, you can go over your cap to like 12gb. Can anyone telkom internet user tell me if that is that true?? Also, does that mean you can download like 30gb in a 1 gb account until the average usage is reached (which mean you are screwed till the 1st)??

One last question, since telkom is giving out free modem if you go for the "self install" option, which one is a better modem, the wifi or the USB?? I remember seeing in one of the thread that people can actually pick up the signals from you wifi modems?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME!!!! i know these are really nooby questions...... thanks for helping guys! :)

These days you roughly get double your allowance - although that amount is arbitrary. This thread will give you a rough idea of what people are getting http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=76994

The wifi one is a much better option. Locking down the signal shouldnt be a problem. :)

Well bonobo_slr [the (un)official Telkom rep] works with the capping system and he says that once you reach your cap you'll be cut off in the middle of a session. So basically it's double allowance on 2 and 3GB accounts while 1GB accounts are hardcapped.

AFAIK the self install deal is still going, go for the WiFi modem.

.

I was capped at 3.6GB by about the 6th of the month. On my dobroadband account 2GB I was capped at 4 GB.

Needless to say I cancelled my 3GB account 3 days ago. Might as well go with WAfrica if I am only getting about 3 gigs out of my 3 gig account.

I heard the USB modem gives problem if you have Vista installed. Not 100% sure about that but I would suggest checking with the beast first

That's very surprising. I guess Telkom have a new capping model every month then . You should PM bonobo_slr and he might be able to help you get the full 6GBs.

HI

I self installed Do basic package about a week ago. I am capped at 1Gb. So far I have used (as per Telkom usage tracker) 750Mb. It would seem that by Monday (2days time), I will have reached my limit! I do not download video, rarely visit youtube, but do use Skype for overseas calls. I cannot believe my usage could be so high!!
My questions then:
1) What application can I use that shows me (in real time) my usage of broadband?
2) Would seem from above that Telkom is going to cut me off in mid session after I have reached my 1gb limit. What do I do then? Go back to dialup? Can I buy more bandwidth from Telkom or are there cheaper options?
Thank you

He meant realtime..

What u do need is a firewall like outpost that will show you all your current and active connections, That way you can see which programs are leeching your bandwith.. also a program like netmeter which will monitor your download and upload speed...

U might wanna turn windows updates off and other updates as they might consume allot considering you only have 1 gig to play with..
