Question for guys who've had vasectomies

It's recommended that 3 months after the op you get tested to make sure the op was a success. Is it necessary to go through a doctor or can it be straight through a lab? What sort of costs are involved? does medical aid cover it?

Also wondering, if you had your own microscope could you check yourself? (pondering the cost of microscopes vs lab tests)
 
What did the doc/surgeon who did the vasectomy say? I would imagine going to the lab/doc would be a lot more conclusive than tugging one out onto a slide.
 
When I got the snip that 3 month check-up was free. Direct with the lab... got the wench to help out at home, delivered the "sample" and they gave me the all clear in 15 minutes

Yeah, I think to be safe rather go through your GP. Can't say if your med aid would cover it so you would most likely have to call them and inquire.
A question or three for you: How did you initiate the procedure, how long did it take and how much pain is involved afterwards? I'm considering getting snipped myself.

You need to do it at the Lab. Should your medical aid not cover it, the cost should be minimal. The reason why its 3 months is that you need at least 30 ejaculations for all the sprem to work out of your system.

Should they find sperm in your seamen, you will then need to see your nut doctor.

Got mine sorted through Mary Stopes Clinic 10 years or so back. Can't remember how much it set me back but I'm sure it was < 500 rhondt.
Phoned them, got a booking for a week later. One "counseling" session before (15 minutes) and then the procedure under local takes another 15 - 20 minutes.
Didn't hurt a bit having it done, bit of bruising and pain which lasted a day or two once the anaesthetic wore off

I had mine done 2 months ago.

You need to go see your nut doctor - contact your GP to see who they recommend. Its possible they may even do the op. After the consultation (they play with your nuts and explain the op), they will book the op at your hospital and you follow up with your medical aid.


Normally the op is painless and takes less than an hour - thats from walking in to walking out. The actual snip is only 15 minutes.

Sadly I had some pain with mine and it was damn sore - very sore.

Its important to wear tight underpants and not boxers for two weaks as it gives support to your nuts. I was able to go to work the next day and the discomfort was gone afte 3 days. You only need to take Panado for the pain.


Now from experience, if you have any discomfort (itichy nuts, pain, swelling) after 2 weeks, you have to go to your GP/nut doc. I ended up with an infection and my right testicle was the size of a tennis ball - cycle so it made it worst. I got some Mybulen for that and the balls where back to normal size after 5 days :)



Now on your medical aid, I had to pay in R1400 plus R500 for my consiltation due to the rates I was charged. I'm on Discovery Costal Core.

Cool topic, was also wondering about this. I cannot believe your Medical Aid paid for this, thought it would be excluded because it's not a medical problem.

Well I'm sure your med aid would rather pay for this than to pay for a pregnancy...

I speak under correction, but I believe pregnancy is generally covered, no?

If I may provide a slightly less worrying account -

1) I had a consultation with the urologist (listed on Discovery's list of specialists as I wanted them to cover the op)
2) The op itself was over inside half an hour, I was knocked out from when I was wheeled in until I woke up outside the theater. Groin region was numb until about 3 hours after the op.
3) The pain was... pain, but tolerable (they gave me a strip of Synap forte to take home, I took one before going to bed and that was it). By the second day it was growing distant and thereafter only bothered me if I sat wrong.

The truly painful parts for me:
the form-filling. over and over with the same ****ing details.
the anesthesiologist's bill. 3x discovery rate
the urologist's bill. 4x discovery rate
**** Discovery.
 
Mine was totally painless. Discovery covered every cent of the op. Was done at a medi-clinic and I'm on Classic Comp. plan.

About having the sample tested. The doc told me to take it to a specific lab at the same clinic I had it done. The only off thing about it was handing it in because the nurse asked me 'is it pure or is there anything else in it?'. In hindsight the correct response to that was probably something like 'it's mixed with lipstick' but I just blushed and said 'no ma'am' and slunk away.
