Hi need some advise on printing how can judge if the picture will come out pixelated
and can one fix it to give the best possible printout
software I have is coral draw 11
using Sony Ericsson w990i 8.1 mega pixal
also want to print it on a A1 size canvas
I also want to add a jpg found on the net thats is 1024 by 764 pixels but cutting out the background so the text on the jpg looks like it is embossed on the pic I took
the text is in arabic and some what "arty" so fonts are not possible also its black and white if thats of any help

On screen it looks really good but printing will cost R650 so cant really afford a screw up
thanks

I don't have much experience in printing but when I was getting my A1 canvas print done, I asked the guy how big does the original have to be and he said that they've blown a 6mp picture up to A1 without it looking bad so I guess your picture should be fine

Why not take the picture at the size you're going to print it, crop out an A5 bit with detail and print?

That way you'll get a sample of what it will look like printed, without the heavy cost...

1. You're very brave to want to print a pic from a phone on A1 (you are probably going to need photo editing software with scaling up capabilities - I don't think Corel draw will be good enough for that).
2. Out of courtesy, make sure you have the owner's permission to use the pic you have pinched.
3. I'm sure if you looked hard enough, you will be able to find the font, even if it is Arabic and arty.

Even if he upscales it he will probably not be happy with the result but it depends on the picture quality and whether the printer knows what he is doing. Sometimes it is better to send it to the printer in A4 and he scales it up on the rip on the machine but most of them just don't know how to operate their printers.

Just check that the image is still 300dpi when its been resized to A1

I don't know why all the concern. By it's nature canvas is very forgiving when it comes to enlargements.

You'll probably have problems with that secondary JPG though unless you upscale it properly.

It won't need to be nearly 300dpi, probably not even half that depending on the image.

Thanks guys I will try to up load the pic to a site later when I get home and post a link
the pic from my phone fits on a A1 with out any stretching (I know that's cool ;) but its a 8.1 megapixal pic )I am now more worried about the second pic I am considering replicating the pic (using drawing tools on corel)
should be easy enough just not used to the writing style of Arabic just hope my cuzzin does not ask me to do more if it goes well lol
think I will try the the a5 idea should be a snap to do thanks for the idea

if you having a problem with the arabic font, why don't you just trace it in Corel and overlay it over your 8mp pic as a .pdf because once it's in vector format (the arabic text) you don't need to cry about image resolution

I know you can take a 6mp image, interpolate it and print it the size of a semi trailer or billboard. Was reading up on this a few years ago so if the results are not to your satisfaction try interpolation to get rid of some pixelation.

One of the reasons for printing something big is so that is can be seen from a distance. At a distance you don't need the sharpness you'd need close up. Close up a billboard looks like a bunch of dots.

If you load the picture into photoshop you can set the canvas as A1 and then view the print size - you'll see what it looks like.

Without getting into a whole argument about counting pixels, 8MB should be enough. The jpg will probably suffer but you can use some software to res it up a bit.

what he said ^^
if you're happy to take an image off the net and use it on an a1 poster, you won't have any problems with under-res output on the enlargement. especially if printing on canvas is your thing.
i used to do a fair bit of poster work and would generally do a mockup 2 x a4 tile of the focal part of the image to check the raster stuff before sending it off to print.
oh yeah, don't forget to do a cmyk preview - although that's negated with a grayscale image.
