Question regarding Conrad drive/ Jan Smuts intersection in Blairgowrie

It will probably be easier to understand the question, if you look at the attached images...

Out of curiosity, at the traffic lights at Conrad Drive / Jan Smuts in Blairgowrie... If one intends to go straight over Jan Smuts into Athole, should they wait in the "turn left" lane or the "go straight" lane?

I feel like I should wait in the "go straight" lane as I am not turning left into Jan Smuts but rather going straight over Jan Smuts.
But it seems I am the only one that feel like this - which is why I am asking what you think?

Yeah, most drivers go straight into Athole from the "turn left" lane....
 
That is an abortion of an intersection just like the small bridge on Conrad about 100m from this intersection.
 
Jan smuts and Conrad is a nightmare in peek traffic times, avoided it like the plague if I could.

It would be more accurate to say that all drivers use the far left lane, to either turn left into Jan Smuts or turn left into Athole, despite the markings on the road.

But it's not just this particular intersection that is treated like this.
