Question related to power surges

Hi :)

I have a question for the knowledgeable people out there. I live in an area where there are frequent power failures caused by, amongst other things, lightning.

My question is whether or not a laptop is less susceptible to issues related to electricity (as compared to a desktop pc)? I apologise if this is a ridiculously stupid question.

Not a stupid question by any means.
If they're both plugged in and running, and there is a substantial power surge then either the laptop or the desktop are likely to be fried. If they're plugged in but switched off it is slightly safer, but even then there is still a risk of damage. The safest is of course if they are not plugged into the mains, so you can be running the laptop on its battery and be quite safe.
If you are frequently plagued by power failures I would seriously suggest using a UPS; they cost about R600 which is less then the cost of repairing a fried machine!
 
just to add... leptops are generally "safer" in this regard as their external PSU's isolates the leptop to some degree. Thus, you're waay more likely to loose the power pack than the leptop.

I'd suggest a proper UPS (not a cheap R600 unit) if you're using a desktop PC in an environment that experiences lots of power surges.

I had a cheap R600 Proline 650VA unit and it wasn't able to switch between AC and battery power fast enough.

I've got a cheap MECER UPS that I got for R450 about 2 years back and it does a good job of switching over to battery if the power cuts, no problems with the delay between switching from AC to battery.

If you have a plug with surge protection, along with a UPS, you should be fine. I have seen, though, machines completely fried even though they were connected to a UPS and surge protector. But we can only do our best and hope that's enough.

Much obliged for the informative answers. It would appear that getting a UPS is the way forward. Just a small query regarding UPS's. Do they make a noise? And if so, how loud are we talking?

If you put your ear up against it you'll hear a very slight hum, but nothing that you would notice unless it was right next to your ear. So in realistic terms no, they are silent. It's just basically a transformer and a battery.

The biggest problem I have where I am is lightning striking the DSL modem (Telkom line side), and not the PC (ie. mains side).

To separate fluff from reality, the answer must also say why with numbers.

If a UPS does that protection, then the best already protected appliance is that laptop. All laptops already contain a UPS.

If a UPS does that protection, then he cited the manufacture spec number that defines that protection. No such numbers exist. The protection inside most every UPS is near zero - only hundreds of joules. So close to zero that advertising will hype it as 100% best protection. A majority will always ignore numbers to believe subjective advertising.

All appliances contain protection equal or superior to anything inside a UPS. Your concern is only a transient, maybe once every seven years, that might overwhelm that protection. Only a properly earthed protector can do that. Nothing attached to an AC plug is earthed; only safety grounded. The solution used everywhere that damage cannot happen is located and earthed where all wires enter the building. Then superior protection inside every appliance is not overwhelmed.

So what does that UPS do? So it magically stops or blocks what three miles of sky could not? That is what others have told you. Reality. A UPS connects your laptop directly to AC mains when not in battery backup mode.

I can easily provide another ten more reasons why that UPS does not do surge protection. Even the manufacturer's specification numbers do not make that claim. Protection for a laptop (also required for the refrigerator, furnace, bathroom GFCIs, and so many other appliances) means a protector (for about $1 per protected appliance) connects as short as possible to earth. Only that solution actually does protection.

Anyone who recommended a UPS can post manufacturer spec numbers that claim that protection. And will explain how its 2 cm part will stop what three miles of sky could not. The difference between fluff and reality is found in damning questions that demand numbers.


DSL modem? Did you know every phone line already has a superior and earthed protector installed for free? Most who make recommendations do not even know of that protector. Instead, make assumptions. Then recommend only on what advertising has told them to believe.

No protector does protection. Not one. A protector is only a connecting device so something completely different - protection. Protection is where hundreds of thousands of joules dissipate harmlessly. Either a protector connect short (ie 'less than 10 feet') to single point earth ground. Or the protector does virtually nothing. Protection is always about where energy dissipates. Facts that separate fluff from reality.
