Hi, I am trying to find a viable, reliable wifi router that allows for the set up of a guest network.
would prefer out the box capability, and not have to do a DD-WRT install, though I would do that as needed.

Alternatively, is there a way to create a guest network using a spare wifi router? if so, would appreciate a pointer to a tutorial/how to...

Asus' DSL Routers have this capability out-the-box at a joke of a price
DSL N10/N12/N14

Have a look at the TP-Link ones also. Most of that Archer / C / D series let you do this out the box, and they're cheap too.

Alternatively, connecting a spare WiFi AP to your main router could work, but the configuration and rules make it difficult.
You could always power it on when there are guests, and power off when not... that's the easy way... but it depends on how you want to limit/restrict access to the network/internet.

It's a little off-key, butthe UniFi devices are great and simple for guest access. You have full control over access rules, can issue vouchers, whatever you like.

Apart from mifi routers, which home router/modem does NOT have a guest AP? I've had dozens and all of them had it

I'm using the unifi setup, it's awesome.

@YingYang , the really old ones :)
I have an aged Billion N73x (Mweb special)

So, an auxiliary question.
As I have a fairly good modem, should I just get a new Router, or just avoid multiple points of failure and buy a 'all-in-one'?
There seems to be little price differential.

Make then investment and get a Ubiquiti Unifi AP or two, best access point you can get and does guest networks out of the box, isolates them from the rest of the network and you can limit their speeds.

Just bear in mind, if you're doing portal stuff, and the controller is unavailable, either your guest network will be wide open or shut down completely

Yowzer Seems Heavy Duty for a small domestic application. but might well be worth the investment will work my way through the user manual... TCPGuru I am not.

You can get them from Scoops https://scoop.co.za/ubiquiti-unifi-enterprise-802-11n-indoor-ap.html , but there are cheaper options out there , its not much of a learning curve as everything is done via web portal , I would recommend that you load the controller software onto one of the computers you use regularly.

Having just one is enough to cover most homes only get a second if you have dark spots , adding additional ones is extremely easy once you have one configured with the control software.

I have tested mine, as long as there is internet access even if the controller is offline it still functions and what ever rules you applied to the guest network still applies as described here basically all your policies still stay in effect, it just doesn't rout trough to the portal its worth mentioning if there is no internet access it shuts off entirely so you wont have wifi access if your internet is down.

The Engenius APs we had before had sporadic fits where every so often it would forget to encrypt the two main wireless networks and it will broadcast them as open, needless to say it was a HUGE security problem and we got rid of them, they were also extremely erratic and unstable.
