I have a Microsoft wireless key board and mouse. The mouse needs replacement. I have bought a new one, but what are the steps to switch the two? Do I uninstall the old one first? Once I do that, I obviously have no control over the keyboard functions. Don't laugh, I am a typical end user :)

Did you buy just a mouse to replace the defective one? If so, is it also a Microsoft mouse? You may just be lucky that the old small USB transmitter/receiver will work on the new mouse as well and then you would not have to do anything. It should just start working. I however would think going by Murphy's Law that it's not going work and then you will have to sacrifice an unused USB port on your computer and plug in the new mouse's USB transmitter in order for the mouse to work. But, my forum name says it all, I may be completely wrong about this.

My old and new Microsoft receivers work interchangeably with my old and new MnK. All I did was press the pair button on the old receiver and on the new mouse and it connected.

You should be able to use your keyboard while trying to pair the new mouse. My old MnK is around 9 years old and my new one is around 4 or 5. The tech may have changed in those years and I could be totally wrong

Are you sure? Turn it upside down and have a look. It most probably is tucked in on the bottom for safekeeping when you remove it. Not knowing the model number of the mouse you have, it would be something like this as can be seen below:

... or it's a bluetooth mouse.

Which model mouse did you buy as a replacement?

Then there won't be an adapter. Just pair the mouse with your computer (assuming it has Bluetooth.)

Then return it because it's missing.
Or you bought a bluetooth mouse.

Post pics and model names etc. Difficult trying to help when you give no details.

Bluetooth Mobile 3600 mouse

Sounds like you had a mouse + keyboard that either has

* a little usb receiver
* a receiver that's kinda chunky and plugged into a usb port.

You bought a bluetooth mouse.

Those are two different things.

Unless your pc has bluetooth, you need to return it and buy a regular wireless mouse that will come with a little usb receiver. It's unlikely the new mouse will connect to your existing receiver so you'll keep the existing receiver for the keyboard, and plug in the new one for the new mouse.
