.... pay an ISP Rxxx per month for a connection and buy the equipment outright for somewhere up to R3000.

or

pay an ISP Rxxx per month and effectively simply lease, and never own the modem - however to recover the cost of the equipment, the ISP charges you an extra R200 per month over a 12 month contract?

The equipment is proprietary and cannot be used on another network.

Just curious ....

Rent it per month at R200, but then there must be a time stipulated in the contract where the R200 a month falls away, as the R3000 + interest has been paid [Edit well - you did say 12 month contract - sorry].

I would rather buy the equipment up front as long as I can use it on other networks/ISPS/etc ....
generally you can get the equipment cheaper than the provider and also the provider does not always provide the best equipment on the market
