Hi guys

I'm currently doing my honours in Computer Science, for which my research is orientated around creating a tailor-made gameplay experience in tower defense games. In other words, altering of gameplay elements according to the player's proficiency in the game (play styles, choices made, that sort of thing).

I am currently at the stage of implementing an artificial neural network that will predict the difficulty of a map design (branching of paths, placement of towers, spawn points of enemies, etc.), however I need to gather training data so that my artificial neural network can learn what makes a map difficult.

If you guys would be so kind, please (voluntarily) answer a questionnaire I made regarding difficulty of map designs. It only records what you perceive your proficiency to be in tower defense games, and what you perceive difficulty of map designs - no personal information and stuff. Won't take longer than 1-2 minutes.

My Tower Defense Questionnaire

Just a few points regarding the questionnaire:
  • Only answer questionnaire once.
  • Only answer if you have any (even a little) knowledge of tower defense games.
  • You can safely assume any composition of enemies or towers, the focus is on the map design itself, not the compositions.
  • There are three circles of different colour in the maps, green indicates locations of towers, red indicates locations of enemy spawn points and yellow indicates exit points for enemies.
  • A single tower can only be built upon the green circle (like Kingdom Rush).

Your responses would be much appreciated!

Why the green circles? I mean, would it not be better to allow the answerer of the questionnaire to imagine his own tower placement? I wouldn't have gone with some of the tower placements that you used, for instance.

PS which university?

Hi

The tower defence game I am working with is not the sort where the player can place their towers anywhere they would like, they are restricted to only placing the towers in the specific positions. Also the map designs were done in such a way so that I could cover a wide range of maps, so that if it is really as bad - then my artificial neural network can identify such.

Just to add, I am studying at NMMU - Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University:)
