Does anybody here know weather Telkom starts capping on a real 3GB of transfers (in other words 3,221,225,472 bytes) or weather they start capping on 3,000,000,000 bytes instead (actually about 2.8GB)?

Thanks.

They start capping if you are over 3,000,000,000 but of course you can download while the system hasn't tallied the cap yet.. apparently the Netgear modems do quite a good job of pulling the wool over the cap's eyes.

Gah, how typical. Why hasn't anybody dragged them before some kind of authority because of this yet? They should call it a 2.8GB cap. False advertising.

I'll try to fool their system om the last day of the month... bastards.

It's not false advertising it is 3GB ... did you get 2.8GB? You only get 2.8GB if you prefer to.

3GB = 3 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes = 3221225472 bytes

According to MaD they start capping at 3000000000 bytes.

3000000000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 2.79GB

I understand that you can get as much as you can download on the last day, but that doesn't change the fact that they say everywhere on their website that the cap is after 3GB when in fact it is after 2.793... GB

No one can really say whether they Cap @ 3,000,000,000 or 3GB because you don't really get cut off the moment you hit 3,000,000,000 or 3GB for that matter . I don't think MaD was really committing himself to the answer.

Have you actually seen that?

4. How much is 3 Gigabytes?

The proper defintion of a Gigabyte according to international standards is one thousand million bytes (3 000 000 000). A Megabyte is one million bytes (1 000 000) and a kilobyte (1 000). However, in computer terms, it has become common to refer to a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, a Megabyte as 1024x1024 (1 048 576) bytes and a Gigabyte as 1024x1024*1024 (1 073 741 824) bytes. Telkom has chosen to use the latter definition for a GigaByte. Your 3 Gigabyte cap is therefore 3 221 225 472 bytes. (Thats over 200Megabytes more than 'proper' 3 Gigabytes). In fact, there is a proper name for the Gigabyte as we have defined it, and its called a 'Gibibyte' (also Mebibyte and kibibyte). However since virtually nobody uses this term, or have even heard of it, we stick to 'Gigabytes'

There was in fact a thread about this over a year ago and people called Telkom and they said 3GB as in 3GB even, not the strict measurement of it.

Only way to know is to download 3000MB plus a few KB and then disconnect, wait 24 hours and see if you're capped. Any takers?

I'm up for it MaD! That's if you meet the requirements above ... :D ... and oh .. b.t.w ... I have noticed that I only get capped -48Hrs [ well definitely after 24 hours though ] .... and this has been happening well since I had ADSL installed so it' possible to Disconect @ 3000MB + a couple of KB and then reconnect and DL @ full speed..... :D

ok.. well.. 2 problems.. i dont have a cap - and i dont have any money (comes with not having a job).. BUT.. your idea sounds good and if you pull it off I will have a chat with my mate at the bottle store and organise a case of beer ;)

MaD - what did u mean by the netgear modems pulling the wool over the caps eyes?

Many people believe that the IP change is software-based, ie a function of the modem itself ad not the exchange. Certain modemscan keep the assigned IP for longer than 24 hours, hence the cap doesn't add up until the IP changes, which would be up to the modem. One fellow I know had the same IP for over 2 weeks..

The chances of only getting 3.0 or 3.2 is pretty academic, since their usage system only calculates when you are disconnected and reconnected. Thus in the last 24 hours of the month you can pretty much do what you like. Most people will get away more than 3.2 billion bytes before they get capped unless they are *really* unlucky.
