So, I can't get through to anyone at SARS on the phone.

I started as a sole practitioner in March 2012. Do I need to submit provisional tax now? I was expecting to have to submit a return after the tax year ends.

How do I register as a provisional tax payer. I have registered with e-filing.

If I need to submit, for what period am I submitting? Is it for the entire past year? Do I need to make projections about the coming year?

Provisional Tax is reported by 31st August and 28th February for the present tax year. So you should have submitted in August and again this week.

Can you download the provisional tax forms on EFiling?

I submitted in August, but only for the 2011 / 2012 period that I was employed and was on PAYE.

I'm poking around on the e-filing site. I can tick Provisional Tax (IRP6) under User > Tax Types. I guess I should do that.

Will I then have to submit for the whole year up until now?

I think they changed it that August is only required if you owe tax.

Out of interest, does anyone know how to unregister from being provisional? I changed to salary in November last year.

Okay, I can now go to Returns Issued > Provisional Tax (IRP6) on the e-filing site. Then there's a Select Period drop down.

Do I need to request returns for 2012-02 and 2013-01? Am I going to be penalised / fined for submitting late?

I'm not earning very much at the moment, maybe I'm below a threshold?

Your best bet would be to just do the second return. Remember that you have to pay what you owe by 28th Feb.

The site appears to be giving errors at the moment.

You don't need to unregister from provisional tax. If you didn't qualify to be a provisional tax payer for a certain period then you simply don't fill in a return. It's as easy as that.

Thanks. Should I include everything from March 2012 to now in it?

edit: Is that 2013-01? sorry for being stupid.

Think it is 2012-02 as it is the 2nd one for 2012, I am provisional tax, but get someone to do it for me.

Period is 2012-03-01 to 2013-02-28, both days inclusive.

When I discussed moving from provisional to normal with my accountant I am fairly sure that he said he would have to advise SARS. I'd hate for SARS to decide that I simply hadn't sent in a return & decide to penalise me ... :)

Provisional tax periods 13-01 is 1 March 2012 to 31 August 2012
13-02 is 1 September 2012 to 28 February 2013.

cheers

Another quick question. My car was broken into and my mileage log book was stolen along with a whole lot of petrol slips. Is there a way that I can just use my mileage since last year to calculate an amount for tax purposes?
