The game I will be reffering to is COD4.

Only a couple of days ago I found out what ping is. (before then I joined a server and thought "hell yea I have the highest ping again") That was untill I realized that the lower your ping the better. At this time of playing my ping was usually in the 400+ region (which is shamefull). I then found a few South AFrican servers, and realized that im not too bad after all, it was just the ping that frag-challenged me.

The problem is, even in the South African servers I still manage to get +/- 150 ping, now im no expert, but thats still pretty high considering the servers are in my homeland.

I then figured perhaps it has something to do with my internet connection im using the :

Vodacom 3G HUWEI E220 modem ------> 3.6 MB/s

If this is normal someone plz tell me. It just seems that im paying so much for a reasonable internet connection, yet it doesnt bring its side. If anyone has the same modem/package and has better results plz tell me. Or any advice/whatever.

Also Im wondering if anyone knows of any Internet package, that is able to reach at least 140 ping on USA servers? One of my favourite servers is a USA one and my ping is so high I cant play it properly? IM sure there are better options out there than Vodacom, although I know very little about the way different ISP's influence gaming I just want the best internet SA has to offer at a price of about +/- R400 pm

And for all COD4 players

If any of you guys know of international servers that will allow SA players to get at least 250 ping max. plz share their IPs

Unfortunatly there really is no substitute for adsl when it comes to gaming online, especially in FPS. My ping is around 50 in cod4 on the local servers and thats pretty average. I have a standard uncapped 512 line with mweb.

So to answer your question, 3G sucks for gaming. However, having said that, adsl lags badly on international servers as well, so your stuck with us :P

I get around 30 ping to SAIX servers with my 384 ADSL line.

Wireless is kark for gaming.

Thats pretty unfortunate, Although tinman, you mentioned that a 512 adsl would work better. I think I will have to swap modems with my brother, he has the same one. He's pc lags too much for COD4 anyway.

Although I noticed that 3G is way faster when browsing the net. adsl is about a second slower.

BTW on a side note, since were on the topic. does anyone know when SA will host more servers for COD4?

150ms is normal for SA servers on 3G. For ADSL its about 50ms.

At 100ms+ it starts to become a disadvantage. At 300ms its a heavy disadvantage.

You won't get a product that allows 140ms to the US. Unshaped ADSL will probably be the best though. For local servers unshaped won't make a difference.

I have been playing with e220 MTN getting about 600-800ms ping on WOW.
I wont even try playing first person shooter thats not hosted locally.
On local Team fortress servers i get 80-120 ping and i still own some of the best player get that ping so yes you can play with it.But most people get 30-60.

Anyways i am getting telkom line but they say the fastest one they have now is wireless weird installing it today.
#g is better than no connection if you really wana play online but it does bring down your gaming preformance gives others a advantage over you.
Sometimes that lag spikes come at just the wrong time.

I get a 20-30 ping on local RSA servers server with a 384 ADSL line. The reason why you get a high ping with 3G is because you signal goes from your 3G device to a satalite and back. You can imagine it takes a few hundred milliseconds to do that, where is ADSL is all on the ground.

And copper is at least more conductive than air ;) hehehehehe

You talking about wimax?

Wimax has almost adsl latencies afaik.

To the OP. ADSL is the best option. If you want to play overseas get an unshaped connection.

What is the best ISP for international gaming in terms of ping (latency)?

Telkom line rental - around 120 bucks
Telkom adsl line with 1 gig international - 199 bucks
Axxess isp local 1 gig account - 12 bucks
Route sentry - FREE

= 341 bucks

Local ping Battlefield 2 average = 25 - 40 axxess
International shaped ping c&c Zero Hour = 270 - 290 telkom
International unshaped ping C&C Zero Hour = 210 - 230 axxess
