Hi,
Currently an mtn subscriber.
I'll be traveling to the US this week and heard rumours that apparently, phones are network locked.

Does anyone else have experience with this?
My hope is to acquire a sim in the US, plug it into my phone and have access to data.
I went to the MTN store and asked, I was informed that it'll work. However, I'm not 100% convinced.

Let me know,
Thanks

You could even load an eSIM before you depart SA. (Depending on which phone you have.)

There are loads of threads on this forum about those particular options.

Just borrow a friend's simcard from another network or pick up a cheapie new sim at PicknPay from a different network. If any other SA network than yours works on your phone then it WILL work with the USA sim, barring any network frequencies that your phone possibly do not support, depending on how old it is.

Awesome thanks, I have an S23 ultra so should be doable.

It would seem throwing an additional sim/esim in should do the trick based off of what I've read and seen. Some how, everyone I know is on MTN lol.

MTN does not network lock phones, (Minus some feature phones possibly).
The carriers in america network lock the phones you buy from them. so this will not affect you unless you are planning of buying a phone from a carrier while you are in America.

Nope, just want to throw in a prepaid sim with data for whatsapp and so on.
Just looking for a carrier that allows hotspotting for work/laptop use as well.

My dad's MTN phone is network locked.

what phone is it?

MTN did do this with cheap dual sim phones but SIM 2 should be unlocked and the phone can be unlocked for R100 i believe.
Yeah, that's right, it's a cheap dual sim phone, can't remember the exact model, but Hisense.
