you can connect without filters, but you might get disconnected when the phone rings your you make a call. Speed might also be slower than usual (which at the moment is pathetic)
Phone cables are pretty much all the same, just try keep it as short as possible.
If you allready have a telephone line tell them you will install it yourself, save yourself R410 and just plug your telephone cable into your modem (which you will probably have by the time they are finished converting your line) and you are finished. Don't forget your surge protector on the modem and line filters on the normal line. Line filters are R50 each (just get one if you only have a phone line) from telkom and a surge protector from any shop at +-R150. Now everything is installed for absolutely free. The only thing telkom does when they come and install is hook up your line to a labtop and test the speed.
If you don't have a line be prepared to fork out +-R120 for line installation as well as the R410 as well as 1 month in advcance line rental as well as any portion of the month from the current day up to the 11th. Thus if you install the 1st it will look like this :
Rental 1-11
Service provider 1-11
Rental 12-11 (in advance)
Service provider 12-11 (in advance)
Normal line installation
Adsl Line installation
Total - One arm and two legs (please)
They give you the option of getting a new line or having the existing line converted to DSL. It is best that a technician comes around and fits the filters and stuff. I will have to take pics of my installation to show people what it looks like, but if you have no clue, then don't try anything DIY...
If you only need one phone line, then convert the current line.
A filter is needed if you want to make calls. If not, then there should not be a problem if there is no filter hooked up...
ok I agree, rather get a telkom tech to come to your house.
(for interest sake a adsl line is a normal phone line of which the volts has been raised from telkoms side. You will not be getting a new line or anything new (if you don't opt specificly for a separate new line as mentioned above) actually from them when they come. From their side they chnage you over so your line now supports both adsl and normal telephone calls. That is why you need the filter. The filter just splits out the normal telephone part. Your telephone and your adsl can be active at the same time though. Hope this helps)
my normal telkom line is spilt into a phone near the plug n another cable going to the room with the pc, this line is then split to the modem and another phone. Can i just get two filters n plug the phones into them using the current cable setup?
