Hey guys! I just need some quick advice on what you guys' would have done if you were in my shoes :)

I RMA'd my dead Seagate 500GB drive, but I also bought myself a new WD drive. So now I'm getting the RMA'd drive (most likely a 7200.12), and now I was wondering if I should maybe sell the new Seagate and buy myself an external HDD for backups ect. or should I just pop the new Seagate into my system and use that for backups ect. ?

It's actually a very silly issue, but I was just wondering what to do..

Thanks in advance!
Regards

I would pop it in your system so you can use excess space on the backup drive to store other stuff.

Maybe move your pagefile to the backup drive for a small performance increase.

Pop it into your system as a backup or get an external HD enclosure for it which can also use as a backup for your data and a convenient portable device you can take with you when needed.

Do I need a technician or somebody to install the HDD in a HD enclosure, and where do I get these kind stuff?

Thanks!

Hell no, you can do it yourself.

Any computer shop or online store should sell them.

Just make sure it has the correct external inteface you want, USB, Firewire or eSATA.

Internal interface will either be SATA or PATA, this depends on the type of drive you have.

Other thing is physical size, 2.5" or 3.5" and this again depends on your drive.

I suspect you have a 3.5" SATA drive so you just have to check what external interface you want to use to connect to your pc or all three of them, whatever suites you.

Okay, cool! Thanks man, I'll have a look around... Think that might be the best bet. Then I "make" my own external drive without having to spend any money actually. Sounds like an idea!

Thanks!

*edit* I did some browsing. Any preferred make (or make with good reputation) when it comes to HD enclosures?

The fact that you're asking makes me think that you do need to get someone to install it for you.;) :D

No, I was just wondering if I need to fiddle with the HDD's pc-board ect. and that I am not sure about.
But since it seems to be very simple, I should be able to do it :) thanks for the concern though.

I'll have a look at that enclosures, thanks man!

I may be way too tired to fully understand this thread, but have you considered hooking the two drives up in an RAID-0 configuration? It will basically create a perfect mirror of the main drive automatically. When you save a file it saves the file on both drives at the same time.

Well, I didn't think (know) about that possibility. Thanks, I'll have a look into it! ;)
