Ok i have linux mandriva and want to install it on a spare harddrive.
My main harddrive has windows XP on it.

What i want is to be able to choose which OS I want to boot during startup.

Do I put both the drives as master, or one slave or what?

sorry if this is nooB:D

Thank you in advance

Yours Sincerely

There is a howto on how to get the boot menu for Windows to allow you to choose Windows or Linux. Sorry, do not have time at the moment to find the link for you, but it is fairly easy to follow the howto.

Install the Mandriva bootloader (Grub or Lilo) on your 'spare' harddrive and the bootloader will automatically include XP in that.
So be careful to choose the right harddrive when prompted by Mandiva installer.
If XP resides on your first harddrive (hda or sda) then install Grub or Lilo in the second hardrive (hdb/hdc or sdb/sdc) depending on your configuration.
Better yet why don't u give your setup as it appears in BIOS. (I meant HDD configurations)

Generally when installing a linux distro after windows is already installed it will automatically configure the bootloader and give you the option @ boot.
Might be different for Mandriva but it's predecessor Mandrake did it for you.

So....

Install XP on drive 1
Run the Linux Distro setup and point it too drive 2

Normally you will then be prompted whether too use GRUB or LILO (boot loaders) towards then end of the Linux installation, pick one and it auto
configures it for you :D
Next time you boot either LILO or GRUB will greet you and requesting your input for OS Selection.

Now how about pouring me a tot :D
