Hi All

Recently the company I worked for (big pharma company) got a new work-contract and appointed some new programmers for the job and hence required a new manager. The position was advertised internally and I duly submitted my CV as I'm a Senior programmer with 10+ years experience in said company.

Unfortunately I did not get the job. :(
In a follow-up meeting with my manager (he sat in the interview) we discussed the positives and negatives of my interview where it came to light that my focus is too technical and they were looking for a more people-focused person. It seems the job of a manager is to bring people together and manage their expectations with little to no technical knowledge (according to my manager)

Now I need to change my focus as I'm going nowhere slowly and was looking for advice on management courses I can do to sharpen that side of my CV. I'm well on my way to 40 with a family and don't have the time to do a full 3 or 4 year course. Any quick/worthwhile management courses I can give a go? Either online or part-time at a university?

Do a higher certificate course, it's mostly 1 year courses

I do think it is a little short sighted of your company to not at least give you a chance.

For one, not everyone who has studied "management" is a good manager. Two, someone who is keen like you might be more motivated to put the effort in to grow and learn as a manager.

In 20 years, I've never had a manager with any kind of management qualification. A strong technical understanding of the work is a huge advantage to any manager.

Perhaps it may be worth trying to understand why they can't see you in such a role. "Too technical" is a BS reason. Their decision is likely more heavily weighted on people skills. How many people do you interact with on a typical day? Have you taken a "lead" role on a multi developer project before? Have you acted as the interface between requirements and technical work before? How successful were you in these roles? How well known are you across the company? etc.
