Am looking to rent a new apartment in the burbs. Normally go through agents etc, but this time wife found an ad on gumtree that we responded to.

Lessor is owner and is now requesting a copy of my ID and a month's bank statement to do a credit check.

Is it legal to ask for a bank statement ?

I don't have much of an issue with the ID book, although she should be able to get by with just the number, but I'm not happy giving someone I don't know a month long bank statement.

Anyone able to assist ?

Have a frank discussion with the Lessor regarding your issue with the bank statement stuff... maybe they'll be accomodating.

I wouldn't give a random person a copy of my bank statement.. period.

I would ask for a 3 months bank statement if I was doing a proper credit check.

Only a month's bank statements?

I would ask for 3 months worth, your employers's number so that I can verify employment also I would like to contact your previous landlord. Then I will get TPN to check you out.

I wouldn't let a random person rent my property.

Unfortunately you need to verify that the person earns enough to rent from you, also you will want them to be able to pay on time.

Really? You couldn't take 15 extra seconds to type out full words?

A salary slip, and such should be sufficient, plus a credit check..

This absolute insistence on very private things like Bank Statements is over the top in my opinion.

I recently had to apply for a place to rent through Standard Bank real estate agents. They too wanted payslip, copy of id and three months bank statements as well as approval to do credit check.
