I have a cheque here from one of my family members. I need to pay him back for something and want to pay by EFT so he gave me a cheque and said his account details are on there.

Question is...where exactly?

I'm looking for his account number and branch code (I already know the branch name). What are the numbers right at the bottom of the cheque?

Can someone help out here? I do all my stuff online so I know FA about cheques.

Usually the second set of numbers.

Cheque number (the order it is in the book) first and then account number followed by branch code iirc.

Which bank? Just to be sure

It's a Standard Bank cheque.

I looked up the 6 digit number on bankserv and it comes up with the correct branch.

Then there's another 9 digit number, which I assume is the account number, right?

Yeah, should be the 9 digit number.

Standard Bank account numbers contain 9 digits, so you're correct.

PS: The branch code usually appears in the top right-hand corner of the cheque as well.

I'm with standard bank, whipped out my checkbook for you:

The account number is at the bottom right hand side.

Reading from right to left:

You will see 2 digits, followed by some weird character. After that weird character you'll find the account number. Big space. Then some weird character and the branch number another weird character and then a 4 digit code, not sure what that is for.

So from left to right:

weird character, 4 digits, weird character, branch code, space, space, space (wait for it! :D ), space, account number, weight character, 2 digit code
