Quick Question: Moon

Okay I just been thinking about this since the lunar eclipse: I always thought that the reason the moon goes through its monthly cycle of being New Moon, Then Half Moon, Then Full Moon and reverse was because of the Earth's Shadow on the moon... so how does the Lunar Eclipse Work? Is it not the exact same phenomenon( i.e. Earth's Shadow on Moon)?
