Hi

I want to install win7 on my lappy but from a flash drive, the OS is on image file
my question is can i leave the image file as is on the flash or would i need to extract it and paste it on the flash ?

thanks

you have to make the flash drive bootable and extract the iso to it. there are plenty of tools to make bootable flash drives from windows iso's...

then you need to set boot from USB as first in your BIOS boot order.

what ^ said. The flash drive must be made bootable first

This way was used back in the day, Microsoft made it easier with their tool.

Just one more thing, if you get an error when using the Windows 7 tool it means you need to change the image to UDF. Although most images is already set to this.

Not sure what you are using but you can change it with PowerISO under image properties.

I also tried several times, but never actually got it to work properly.

Eventually just bought myself an external slim CD-ROM drive.

Using Microsoft's tool always works, no matter what. I even used the same tool for Windows 8 and it worked perfectly. Just try it and you'll see. There is no point in using anything else.

I thought it was the height of laziness and responded with the first result from googling "install win7 usb flash".

i wanted to know specifically about the image file, i didnt find that on the google results and yes i did search
not lazy just didnt find what i was looking for

Not sure what you are actually trying to do but I use this free and simple program to take a Windows 7 ISO file and put it on a bootable flash drive: http://wintoflash.com/home/en/

Am I missing something here?

Why not just install it via DVD?

Because you don't always have a working CD/DVD-ROM to use or the laptop doesn't have one (Netbook)

I once had to get a boot loader and put it on a floppy disk and boot off that just to boot off a flash drive because the laptop BIOS didn't support booting off a flash drive.

Theres a method using the image and built in windows commands, most notably 'diskpart'. Most worthwhile method in my mind as you can never be sure of always having tools available. You do need to prep on at least Vista/7 though.
