Hey guys

I have a family member who has a PC which is being switched off and unpugged (from wall-socket) almost everyday, because of thunderstorms in her area and the fact that she's not at home very often, so she unpluggs her PC. Now everytime the PC starts, the CMOS looks to be reset, or at least, the time/date in the CMOS is reset....

What I wanted to know is, can the CMOS battery run down? I know this happens due to the fact that she unpluggs the PC very often, but I just wanted to know if it's the CMOS battery or something? I also noticed that when the CMOS is "reset" she tends to get BSOD errors, and when you boot up and set the time/date in the CMOS, it runs just fine...

Thanks guys
Regards

Yes. CMOS battery is I think a common size, usually CR2025. R10 at your local chemist or camera shop.

Try it - what have you got to lose?

Sounds like the CMOS battery, they pretty cheap just replace it and it should sort out the problem.

If replacing the battery does not work, its probably the cap thats closest to where the battery is thats blown
