Hi

So I stopped smoking about 2 months ago. I must stress that I am over weight about 1.9m tall. So I thought because I stopped smoking and eating healthy my general health will improve right?

No I am suffering from shortness of breath, lack of general energy, things has become so bad that I thought I might have a chest infection (had a regime of Anti Biotics), after walking 2 meters I am totally out of breath. I have resorted to pushing myself around the office on a chair. Getting in and out of the car is a nightmare which leaves me breathless.

I have sought help from a doctor and will be seeing another one this coming Tuesday. I just want to know from anyone else who has stopped smoking if they have gone through similar side effects (is it normal?)

I am really at my wits end. I have previously stopped smoking about 10 years ago and never had any of these issues. My sleeping patterns has gone to hell and back.

Anybody has some advice for my concerning all the side effects and the general poor health I am experiencing

Thanks

i also stopped about 2 months now and no i havnt experienced anything that you have

but i do munch alot when im home ...i crave sweet things

The side effects aren't from QUITTING smoking, its from STARTING in the first place, don't let it discourage you:)

But to add I quit for almost 2 years now (smoked 8 years) 10kgs lighter than 2 years ago, and the fittest I've ever been. But for me it wasn't only quitting smoking, it was a lifestyle change, eating better, going to gym ever since, best decision I ever made. I'm sure things will get better if you stick it out.

Free basic critical thinking lesson: Correlation does not imply causation. :)

I'm also a big guy; wouldn't call myself overweight, but I am 'round the 100kg mark and over 1.9m tall, so not dissimilar to yourself. Had my last puff on the 12th of last month. Had a couple of days of an annoying and incessant cough, but apart from that I have been feeling progressively better with each day's passing. Don't think the issues you're currently experiencing should be labelled as side effects of smoking cessation.

Your symptoms don't really sound like they're related to stopping smoking. I quit at the start of the year and didn't experience anything remotely like that. Sound quite serious so glad you're going to a doctor. The last thing you need to do now is pick up an enchie bru!!! Keep it up it will only get better from here. I also have changed lifestyle and have lost 13kg since November last year and I promise you you will feel great in time.

I have stopped before a few years ago and did not have anything like the hell I am having now. I am very scared and NO I will not light another one but this shortness of breath is affecting my day to day life style.

I quit a month ago.
Effects:
-salivating
-sinus infection
-slight rash on face

I have no desire to smoke and others smoking does not bother me, though I now feel sorry for them lol

Get a light sedative over the counter to dampen your side-effects or get sinutab with codeine - it will help clear any sinus (snot and slime lol) and help you sleep.

Good luck I hope your doc can help.
Take it easy, and take time to breathe very slowly and deeply in-and-out , now and then.

You mentioned you have begun eating healthy, is there a chance you may have cut your calories by too much too soon? That can definitely leave you without energy.

Your body has begun its repair process on the lung. Its resecreting mucous ect to flush out the tar, breathing will be difficult there will be lots of phelgm.

Dont be discouraged, you might need an asthma pump (salbutamol) for when necessary use. It will clear up on its own in a few weeks.

Next question, how old are you any significant medical history ? you can tell us you 1.9m and stopped smoking but if you stopped smoking because you were diagnosed with TB, emphysema or you 66 years old i would think those would be significant in rating your performance no?

Go and see a doctor or even a lung specialist (pulmonologist).

I had the same symptoms and landed in hospital, 7 days in ICU and 3 days in normal ward.

I thought the shortness of breath will improve in itself and ended up with pneumonia and a hospital invoice of ~R70k. Fortunately the medical aid paid it all.

Because asthma is hypersensitivity and hypersecretion. Smoking desensitising the lung's mucosal membrane and dries it out.

He has already been to a doctor and going for a second opinion. Dont seek out specialists on your own very bad idea, besides even the idiots of the doctor world can see URTI coming a mile away. You can develop bronchitis quite easily when you stop smoking in the early stages if left unchecked it can progress but you will present with a fever and yellow sputum ect ect.

Could also be due to change in season. Your sleeping patterns will be distorted due to the chemical imbalances in your body. It will normalise within 2 - 4 months and 6 months for your body to be 'addict' free. THe reversal of damaged caused by smoking can take up to 10 years before you fit the same profile as a non-smoker depending on how much you smoked.

Read the pharmacology of nicotine here will help you understand why all these things generally occur:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine

Read the side effects of cessation of nicotine here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking_cessation#Side_effects

Provided you have no secondary issues you shouldnt really be concerned too much.

Sounds like obesity to me.

I smoked for 16 years, only quit recently, no problems.
