I was a heavy smoker for 19 years. I smoked Stuyvesant filter most of the time.
Quitting has been a goal for a very long time. an Elusive dream.

Quitting was not hard because i tried and failed. It was hard because i never quit. And sometimes it was hard because i did quit. And there in lies the answer as to how i broke free from this terrible habit / addiction.

I woke up one morning and looked in the mirror and thought to myself that i do not understand why i smoke. It makes very little sense to me. This ritual that has to be adhered to every 30 - 60 minutes in my case in order to appease the angry habit gods. I opened my mouth and shined a light into my mouth and observed the back of my throat and my tongue and other visible areas and also thought "my god, what a terrible disgusting orifice" So red and veiny and gross.

Granted i had upper respiratory tract infection again at the time.
Then this epiphany came to me. I am not a smoker.

How can i be a smoker and what is a smoker?
Was i born with a cigarette?
Was my body designed to require me to smoke to survive?

As far as i am aware my body requires food, water and air to sustain itself. Smoking is not part of that design so it seemed strange that i would be doing something that is not part of my core requirements to survive.

So i accepted that i have mislead myself and realized i am not a smoker.
That was 13 days ago and i have not touched another smoke.

I am not trying to quit either, hence i am not withholding anything from myself. So i am not getting upset and i am not irritable. You cannot quit smoking if you are not a smoker.

Hopefully this gives you something to think about.
Good luck on the journey.

Cheers

Clearly still smoking the green in order to post garbage such as this.

Well done!
For those of you who wanna quit, I would seriously recommend Allan Carr's Easyway..

There is a mind shift required to give up smoking cold-turkey, I agree. I also started to think of myself as a non-smoker when I decided to stop - it was my 3rd attempt and my final one as it turns out as I never smoked again (not yet anyway, 8 years later). I think the mind shift is about creating a new mental habit. If someone offered me a cigarette I would say no, I'm a non-smoker. If I felt stressed and thought about smoking I'd be like why, I'm a non-smoker. Somehow, just defining myself that way made it easier to resist.

I also used the rule of 3 (be extra strong in resistance on the third hour, third day, third week, third month) though I don't know if that made any difference - it doesn't reflect reality in any way I don't suppose.

I knew I had stopped for good when I lost count of the days since stopping.

If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.

Woo

Well done crocopede. My grandfather said the same thing after smoking for 50 years and never had another smoke.

Can definitely recommend Allan Carr’s Easyway.

That book helped me quit just over 4 years ago.

Champix and haven't smoked in 2 years after 15 years of smoking.

I know I'm addicted to nicotine and some days are harder then other days but the time between cravings becomes longer and longer.

Good luck dude

Hi. Another +1 for Champix. After like 10 years of smoking, I stopped within 2 weeks. It was R600 for a 1 month course but I didn't even bother taking the stuff after about day 11. Haven't smoked in 4 years now
