In what year was South Africa linked to rest of the world by submarine cable?[:)]
I suppose you could research this, but then you would be missing the point. I would like people to post what they know, first...
 
Well if you're not talking specifically about internet access then the first submarine cable (to England) was in 1889.

Excellent source for a lot of trivia

It is actually amazing that they could lay a cable then - considering the effort it still is today with all the technology that is available today to assist the cable manufacturers, layers and maintainers!

I expect it was placed very close to the coastline but I agree it must have been a mammoth task, and even more so to troubleshoot a cable fault. I doubt they had TDR's in those days [;)]
