Anyone here who has been to the island of Réunion?

In terms of price, facilities and general experience, is it better or worse than the Seychelles and Mauritius?

Thanks

Hi there

I was born in Reunion and lived there for almost 20 years.

In terms of price:
Mauritius is definitely cheaper than Reunion or Seychelles (about the same as SA for instance).
Reunion is quite expensive (almost 3 times more so than Paris or London) but accommodation rates will very greatly from one place to another. North-West coast and South coast hotels are more expensive than anywhere else because these are the main beach spots.
Seychelles is imo overrated and you spend a great deal of money for (almost) nothing. Maybe I'm exagerating a bit :) It's a great place but for the same amount of cash you could much better in the Maldives for instance.

Facilities:
Seychelles is obviously geared for tourism and Reunion nor Mauritius can beat that.
Reunion is about the same as Europe (same level of dev) but again more expensive (Euro zone+overseas tax+etc)
Mauritius is very much geared for tourism and won't disappoint despite a clear lower level of dev.

Experience:
You'll get the best service in Seychelles but again... at what cost? :p and it's beach only
In Reunion you'll get nice beaches but you'll also have the Volcano, the mountains (more than 3000m high), trecking, and all kind of cool activities (paragliding, surf, surk kiting, etc)
Mauritius is more farniente and is probably more layback. Service in main hostels was flawless not long ago but I can't vouch for them nowadays as it seems the customer service is getting quite bad (or at least not as good as it used to be)

Well, imo, the best value for money is still Mauritius - even if the panel activities is not a wide as Reunion. If you want to be able to do more - but higher price tag - go to Reunion.
And except if spending R40K is just the same for you as forking R60K you can go to Seychelles, you won't regret it (but again if you can fork R60K in a snap you'd rather go somewhere else)

Why don't you check the Maldives. It's an awesome place - 1 week starting at R35K for 2, flights included - and you will not regret it! That's pure awesome farniente though ;)

I was not planning on spending anywhere close to those amounts you mentioned :)
