R10m damage caused by KZN protest

Durban – Damage estimated at R10 million was caused during a protest against a councillor in the Mshwathi local municipality, the KwaZulu-Natal government and police said on Tuesday.

Residents of the municipality, which has its seat in New Hanover, set fire to the local SA Social Security Agency office, three social development department cars, a construction vehicle, and a roads department water tanker, police spokesperson Lieutenant Thulani Zwane said.

The protest started late on Monday night. Residents were apparently unhappy with their local councillor, who they claimed had been imposed on them following the August 3 local government elections.

Cases of malicious damage to property and public violence were opened at the New Hanover police station. No arrests had been made and no injuries were reported.

KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, condemned the destruction and urged police to catch the perpetrators. The province could not allow such distractions at the start of a new term of local government, she said.
