I see there are a couple more R1k netbooks about.

e.g.:
iSonic E7005 7" VIA 8505 Netbook
Telefunken TNB-700B 7" ARM Netbook (Win CE 6.0)

Does anyone know if these are usable for basic word processing and net access? I believe you can get 3rd pty office SW for Win CE.

Would it be possible/help to reinstall with Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

And anyone using the Vodacom Linkbook if it still exists?

I'd rather pay a little bit more for a 2nd hand Atom based netbook.

Srsly, I bought a one or two week old Lenovo for R2k about a year ago and the thing is awesome. Can't feel a difference in performance in every day tasks compared to my quad core, long battery life, super silent.

Which model is it?

Thanks..useful!

I'm working with a small NGO out of an informal settlement and we were thinking to get a few (possibly a lot) netbooks for people to hook up to a local wifi. So.. getting a couple of used ones is ok for a trial but am interested in how it could be scaled up if there's strong interest. Thinking to get a couple of these cheapo's and see if any are semi-functional...maybe try different OS and see if it improves things.

For that type of connections maybe you should look at ChromeOS and depending how formal you want to go you can always Contact Google SA and inform them of the project. Who knows they might assist you in scoring a couple of Chrome Books on the cheap.

Which City?

The Intel Atoms are OK for web browsing and light word processing, but I would most definitely not advise anyone to get that kind of machine for work/big tasks.

You will be surprised what you could do with an Atom. The SSD on my netbook is the bottleneck and not the processor. I was also using my netbook for two weeks to do some QT development and had no issues, even turning my netbook into a media centre soon.

Hmm. My Intel Atom D510 (1.6GHz dual core with HT) felt terribly slow when I just tried to play music in Amarok and browse webpages on it with Firefox.

So now I'm just using it as a file server & router, which was what I got mine for in the first place. Unfortunately I can't playback 1080p videos with the onboard GPU.

Speaking of cheap netbooks, does anyone here except me still have the original Asus EEE PC 70x series? I was wanting to sell mine, but I guess my price was a bit too high back then?

The Netbooks with Win 7 Starter feel terribly slow and sluggish to me. I used Nlite on my EEE PC to slim down Windows Xp to fit onto a 2GB SSD and it flies considering it's a 700MHz Celeron :)

Been running a Virtualbox testing Debian Squeeze (gdm3) on my Samsung NC10 (N270 with 2GB, Ubuntu 10.04). Very usable for the testing, however, I have seen that running FF4 in the Virtualbox really hogs the processor. Have you tried any other music player?

Problem is with netbooks that Microsoft limit the amount of memory manufacturers are allows to install on it to be able to license Windows for the device. And we all know Linux doesn't need a big CPU, it just needs memory to run well. Slap 4 gig of ram on a Atom 1.6 and see how it hums past anything M$ can give it.

Doesn't sound right, mine plays HD videos fine, just takes a little longer to load (VLC).

My mom and Bro bought the HP Mini netbooks from CNA for R2000

1.6 Atom processor
2GB Ram
250GB HDD
Built in 3G
Webcam

I think it was a pretty good deal
