Q: How expensive would the price per liter of petrol need to get to justify the purchase of R2 million electric car?
(assuming current electricity prices, the car is on parity with a similarly specced petrol vehicle and an annual distance of 100 000 km)

Annual distance of 100 000km annually is too high
Its 277km/day
Don’t think electric vehicle are made for such distances

So i did the math. At 10 000 km per year (27 km per day), the fuel price would need to be 10 times higher for you to be able to justify the car payment based on the fuel saved.

At 100 000 km per year (270 km per day), you'd be saving about 80% of the car payment already. If it hit R30, an Etron would become affordable. But only if you live in your car 4 hours a day, 7 days a week. And you would need to charge at home for 6-7 hours each night.

It's sad that BMW lost a good opportunity because their i3 was relatively affordable, it looks like they had to purposefully sabotage it by making it as hideous as possible so that their other models are not threatened.

Without the infrastructure, it isn't really worth it. You need to install a next-gen fast charger at home and you truly need next-gen fast charges between major cities. Cape to the Burg. Only then it would be justified.

Unless you win the lotto then you can do what you want. You don't understand how badly I want the features of Tesla. Doggy Mode, 360 DVR, etc...

What electricity price did you use for your calculations? And at what charging efficiency?

R2m cars are for people that can afford a R2m car. And if you are honest with yourself and you can afford that then neither petrol or electricity should be a problem for you and you'll just get the car that you like the most or give you some perceived social credit.

If you buy a R2m car but then have to worry about the price of petrol you seriously need to reevaluate your life choices.

What is the price of petrol these days? I did not check *throws R100 into my 488 pista*

I don’t think many people buying a R2 million car is buying it to save money on fuel… at least not yet
