R201 wifi problem

I picked up a Huawei R201 today (vodafone branded) and stuck in my 8ta sim.
I can't get any of my devices (iPad, iPhone, laptop) to connect to the wifi of the device. Tried various permutations of ssids passwords and encryption options.
Is it possible this thing is faulty in such a way that the ssid is visible to wifi devices but all pairing fails?

Ps it works fine with Internet access when connected to the laptop via USB.
