ALMOST 1000 classrooms and 48 school laboratories will be built in mainly rural areas of the Eastern Cape over the next five months at a cost of about R305-million using “alternative technology” building materials.
Education spokesman Loyiso Pulumani said it was part of a vital drive to address shocking under- spending on school infrastructure in the province.

About bloody time.
Should we thank Helen Zille's twitter comment for starting a fire under the ANC's bum?

Of course not...

But anyway good news, that is a lot of classrooms and labs for only R305m?

nope, it's been in the pipelines for some time now. Unfortunately they are abusing the recession dip by shafting the consultants doing the designs/construction oversight on these projects in a BIG way. Quite a number of consulting firms around EL have been forced to tender on the projects with rates so low that they'd be running at a loss - but the turnover is just enough to help cover salaries.

// crosses fingers

Please please let them keep their greedy paws out of the money.

Couldn't help but notice that this "alternative technology" being used is prefab drywalling. Lol - anyone want to take bets that these classes won't last 10 years, before having to be rebuilt again.

alternative technology....

This is just part of our commitment to ensure we deal decisively with under-spending of the infrastructure programme in the province.

Is this like someone putting their finger in the dike hoping it will stop the flood of refugees from EC to WC?
