R30K run-around - old Opels?

He's in need of something with 4 doors, read the OP. Also, with a new born, probably something more reliable than an old Mini and an old top cracking Opel.

How about the 4 door version of the Bantam, what they call them....Tracer?

For a family my vote is the Camry, the 1993-2000 model.

You are referring to sheeple. Look I get the whole let's poke some fun at Opel and it is not completely unwarranted. Keep in mind that they did just win the Euro COTY, way ahead of VW I might add.

Back to the OP - I had an Opel that I traded in for R30k. They probably sold it for R40k or more. I can honestly say that while there was nothing wrong with the car, I would not buy it if that was my budget.
 
Honda Ballade if you want reliable and easy to maintain.
 
Do you really want the wife driving around in a car with safety tech from that era?
 
I had a 97 Astra for 6 years, they aren't incredibly reliable, the air con will more than likely be packed in, which will cost a bit to fix.
They don't have airbags or abs either. Though it was a fun car to drive years ago I'd not recommend getting one.

+1 They are not very safe by modern standards either. That is the main reason I got a safer and more modern car for my wife.

The Bantam was sold quickly and now after Easter break, I am back on hunt.

So no Opels but Camrys and Ballades are my targets. Ballade was my first choice actually, love the 98/99 shapes but all I found were people racing them but I have seen a few clean ones.

I was surprised about Korean recommendation, I would think to avoid them as I thought they only got good the past few years. So you say a Hyundai Accent 96-99 would be a good buy?

Regarding safety, its always a concern yes but this is really is a town run-around. We are in west rand and very close to shops and creche so its literally 5 KMS on backroads on quiet roads. An accident can happen anywhere though so its something I would consider.

Renault: Also surprised when someone mentioned Renault. I tend to stay away from the French cars. Are they good though? I have seen 2006 Meganes and 98 Scenics in this price range. Good buys?
 
Renaults going for that price are because they don't retain their value. Try looking for older Polos maybe? Even in the Westrand driving on the back roads it's better to have some form of safety.
 
Sorry to hijack this thread (:p) but what would you guys suggest in a second hand car if your budget is more in the R80000 range?

Many accidents happen within a few blocks of home.

Its not really about the distance its about other idiots speeding and causing accidents.

My across the street neighbour was taken out by a speeding hooligan right in front of our house. Head on collision.

Drunk driver whisked off to jail for the weekend. Neighbour and his employee off to hospital. Legs crushed behind dash in nissan champ.

Drunk driver some face cuts bruises etc. driving a fiesta from 2010ish
 
The 2006 Megane is alright but the older ones (up to 2003) were a lot stronger. The 98 Scenic is pre-facelift and you should be able to get a 2000 facelift within budget. I'd recommend a Clio 2 as first choice if it's not too small and you're interested in a Renault

So many speeding and drunk drivers in EL, and no law enforcement lately. Cr@p the number of people skipping red robots these days are get more and more by the day.

Hope your neighbour recovers soon.
