R70m payday for PSL negotiators

R 70 mil, for securing R 2,1 Billion in sponsorship deals? That is like only 3 and bit%!

Being someone who also gets paid on commission this is a compromise. But my personal feeling is that they have done well to make corporate South Africa aware of the marketing potential of the biggest sport in the country. Now with the added cash flow to the teams, that used to get about R 350k a month and now will be receving about 2/3 million a month, can now afford to hold on to some players. Especially smaller teams like Celtic, who have their best players taken after every season to the Gauteng teams.

So for me it is a job well done.

Plans for development of soccer talent in SA by PSL = 0
Plans to pay obscene amounts of commission to PSL executives who already get paid a whack anyway and who's job it is in any case = done and dusted.

I have to disagree with you sox

In both big deals here, the corporate sponsors were practically begging to get on the bandwagon.
There's no problem paying commission where a "sales" job has been done, but to pay huge gratitudes to execs who didn't actually do much is a bit sickening to me. Even more so considering these are mostly political appointees

I'd support something like for example they'd decided performance bonuses would be paid to PSL execs based on how well the league is run

Yes I agree sox, and have said as much in the past.
There is however more than just the economics to consider here but also the social responsibility.
An abnormal situation existed (as in many areas of SA business) where a state entity (in this case the SABC) was guaranteed the rights for certain things like major soccer in this country.
High prices for broadcasting rights will have a positive spinoff for many teams should the money filter down to those levels so it is a good thing, but these guys hardly deserve the type of money they will receive.

Most companies have caps on commissions / gratuity that can be earned.
Considering our situation, the gratuity is certainly justified, just excessive. R70m amongst a handfull of already very wealthy men.
Ubuntu my ass.

What do you mean no selling? Do you think ABSA and SS were not sold on how the PSL could up their brand image with the soccer loving communities?

One other thing McSack, they are not political appointees, they serve the PSL by the simple reason that the teams they OWN are contesting the league, politics has ***ol to do with it.

I think that the interest shown and moneys offered by ABSA and SS had everthing to do with the 2010 world cup being staged in SA and very little to do with any selling by the PSL. (ABSA lost out on the 2010 sponsorship to another bank which garauntees exclusivity, and the broadcasting rights were put out to tender with SS being the only candidate to offically submit tender documents)

I conceed... I don't have enough background or time for research to back up any suspicions about the politics of who runs the PSL

I don't think 2010 played a mojor role, as FIFA sanctioned sponsors will have the rights to advertise at stadiums, in the immediate area around stadiums and obviously airtime during the event.

IMO, corporate SA is waking up to the potential of associating their brands with soccer will pay of in the long run. With the increase in spending power of the majority of Saffers growing, not to mention that Soccer is by far the biggest sport, 61% of males and 31% of females. Means to get in early will pay off.
