R800K Perlemoen seized in Midrand

Over R800,000 worth of perlemoen has been seized at the Ultra City on the M1 in Midrand, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Bloemfontein police alerted the Gauteng flying squad that a minibus had failed to pay for petrol at a filling station in the city, and asked them to watch for the vehicle, Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

The vehicle was found and when police approached it, two people fled and one man was arrested.

Perlemoen, also known as abalone, worth R800,000 was recovered from the vehicle.

The 30-year-old man would appear in court soon to face a charge of possession of perlemoen, which is a protected species of marine mollusc and is considered a delicacy.

Apparently 2 years ago, legal farmed abalone would be fetching around R357 per kg. I would assume that "illegal" would be about half that price so round it up to R200 per kg.

It means that the taxi was carrying nearly 4 TONS of Perlemoen... something doesn't seem right about that to me.

The last I heard a can of abalone (drained weight 213g) cost around R600 :wtf:

That means the taxi had around 280kg of abalone in it.

I long for some abalone rolled in some crumbs and fried in a pan.

These poaching mofos are the reason why diving for abalone isn't legal anymore.

ahhh ok, I couldn't find an official price, so had to work off the only figure I could....

But still a can of abalone would be legal farmed etc etc.. the illegal stuff would be considerably cheaper because they would just want to get rid of it.
