R8k rig....Your recommendations please.

Oh I missed the snobs part in his original post.. so... sorry. Point taken.

I think the situation in games has changed a bit over the past year where previously a lot of the PC games coming out were basically XBOX ports and didn't take a lot of GPU power; now there's a bunch of games out there that push mid-level GPU's beyond where they can output max levels. A 7850 won't get you max anymore in e.g. BF4, Crysis3, Tomb Raider, even Bioshock Infinite, but you can turn down a notch or two and get acceptable performance.

But not everyone can buy big at one time. It's just not a possibility with their finances. And some people are content with turning down a few settings if it means they can still play the games they want to play. The difference between ultra shadows and high shadows in Crysis3 is pretty minimal to someone who doesn't know what to look for, and it doesn't affect the gameplay at all. It's all good and well to suggest he keep saving up and keep saving up but he may take another 6 months to even get a toe into PC gaming at all.

No worries bro, i can be fairly arrogant at times but not this time :p.

We just wanted to see if he could add in a little bit extra to get a pc that isn't low end meaning a further 8k down the line. Then mr snob caller came along and ya lol kinda killed the thread. We understand budget, we are not all snobs with 20k to blow on pc's, we have saved and battled to get low end pc's before so we do understand and we are certainly not snobs haha.

Shyte. What a silly comment. So basically any recommendations will be looked at as being snobby, thread death of note.

So before this thread dies a horrific death...im gonna derail it quickly....So for me next step on GPU is the new R9 280x wrt new games on the market?

Till next week Monday: http://www.wootware.co.za/computer-...it-pci-express-3-0-desktop-graphics-card.html

I take it they don't know what games it comes with yet as they don't have stock of it.

Or this could be the reason: http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/32817-never-settle-coming-back-to-rx200-cards

Very nice but that asrock board, yummy :D and he can go up higher than 8gb in the future.

I have a i5 2500k machine with a GTX 550TI.
I know it's not the greatest graphics card but I am able to play most games on max settings with maybe a change here or there to the settings.
Skyrim on ultra with HD textures packs, etc.

It's great to have a massive R20000 machine but if you can only afford R6000-R8000 then I don't think it's a major issue at all.
Granted I didn't have to buy a hdd or monitor which helped.

Could you list the games you are maxing on that card please? We should have asked what games he plans on playing.

Yup but look at what nomnom has managed to put together with or without my mobo change for his budget. Nomnom you bloody snob you!!!!!!

Nomnom my only concern is the lack of hyper threading on these haswell cpu's. Well the i5's but that will have an impact on a much higher end gpu right?

It will become a major issue in the VERY near future.See my rig and still I need to get a stronger GPU otherwise it's gonna become a dilemma in the future for me.

Killa,it will be more of end 2012 to current pc games he wanna play and I forgot to mention he's gonna play on Sinotec 42 FHD LCD screen. And at NomNom thanks for putting that list together...will show him tonight.

Skyrim
BF3
Borderlans 2
The Witcher 2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call of Pripyat with environmental mods and HD texture packs.
Bioshock Infinite
Tomb Raider
I can go on.

That is most of the games he wants to play.

I realize I will most likely need a gpu and even cpu upgrade in a year or 2 but I have a 13 year old son that receives the components so it's a win win for me.

That being said, the i5 2500k is a good cpu.
I will most likely just go for a gpu upgrade when needed.
Next gpu will probably be R4000 +.

Agreed, that motherboard is nice, I was looking at that one on Rebel Tech's site but it was a bit expensive so decided not to.

I've edited my post with the motherboard.

Wondering if it is worth looking into a AMD system.

I was also thinking the same. How does the quad cores perform?

He would go 8 core not 4 core, 8320. my only issue is i am struggling to find a decent mobo for it at the moment at the same price point that haswell offers. From bf 4 onwards games will be 8 core but cerebus is correct single threaded poor performance but as far as i am aware bf 4 is the first game that will use 6 cores but with mantle cpu overhead isn't as big an issue.

I would seriously wait for bf 4 to be released end of the month, just to see how the 8 core cpu's perform vs the 4 cores hyper threading and non hyper threading if you call it that. Whether having 8 cores will benefit him moving forward because if he ever gets a better vga card that haswell should in theory bottleneck the card as 8 core games will become the standard and he will be stuck with a 4 core cpu without hyper threading.

There are some bf 4 beta benchmarks but i would suggest he just hangs in there until the actual release is benched as the build will be far better and final, well as final as any EA game can ever get. Sometimes it feel like playing bf is like playing an open beta for as long as it's popular :D.

I am not sure i would want to pick the haswell without hyper threading over the 8 core, just purely due to the future. Even though haswell single threaded will be faster if he gets a card i am sure 8 cores feeding the card will pomp the 4 cores on the i5's that don't have hyperthreading. I know you can't always wait and wait but we are literally talking two weeks, maximum 3 weeks and we will know without a doubt what the story is. so it isn't like we are waiting for the next gen cpu's just waiting to see how the first game to use more than 4 cores performs on the amd vs the intels without hyperthreading and remember hyperthreading in a dual system can cause microstutter, i had to turn it off in bfbc2. Anyways chat to him and see what his thoughts are but i would not rush into anything until bf 4 is released and benched proper :D

From what I've heard, in games, the GPU is almost always the bottleneck. Apparently you will be hard pressed to find a GPU that will significantly bottleneck even the FX-6300.

For this reason I recommend that you do not skimp on the GPU in the least bit.

Also, be careful that the power supply you use is a good quality one (as well as supplying enough watts of course).

You could also ask on www.tomshardware.com before you buy. Seems to be a lot of knowledgeable people over there.

I just love the new X-660 psu I got from sybaritic on sale. R650 for a gold rated 660w fully modular king psu... :D

I think it would be easy to find a gpu to bottleneck a 6300, slow ass cpu but you make a valid point with mantle being more gpu than cpu it's hard to tell but bf 4 will show us i guess :D.

Many games are cpu intensive, so you are already bottlenecked before you hit the gpu :D. I think that sounds wrong but it seems right :p

Thanks Killa and at Razor...Thanks for your input. So I think he can wait 3 weeks to see the results and then only make a decision...
