As the title states,my friend has R8k budget and is looking for a bang for buck rig.He has a screen, keyboard,HDD and mouse. He has done some searching but cant decide on what route to go.Your input would help.

I think more input is needed from you.

Use of said rig? Gaming, applications only ummm yea or maybe both?

going to be hard pressed for a good gaming PC at R8k. your friend will want to get a decent video card to future proof it so he won't be buying a new one every year. HD7970 can start somewhere around R4k

Don't buy nvidia at all or even think about it i would recommend. I will look into the cpu and mobo later, a clan mate bought haswell cpu plus mobo for 4k, you still need memory though so already over budget.

So he needs the following:

Case
PSU
Mobo/ram/cpu
Graphics

Is that correct?

My recommendation would be something like this:
PSU - R800
8gb ram - R989
hd7850 - R2000
Corsair 400r - R920
i5 3570 - R2400
H77MA - R1000

Total - R8100

this

for R8 it's a reasonable machine and WAY better than what most people will have. it will run games well (maybe not on max settings, but well).

don't listen to spec snobs who tell you that this machine won't cut it ;) i run an i5 a step down from that, and SLI'd GTX285s (far inferior to the 7850) and my rig is awesome :)

How much did the those 285's cost you?

When you say your rig is awesome ummm that is open to review i think. I mean how is it running bf 4 if i may ask? What games do you run at the moment, i just want to get the snobbery out the way quickly. How much did those two top end cards cost you? did you buy second hand? If i recall those were expensive cards, so i hope you bought them second hand or your snob comment might seem a bit ummm i dunno odd.

Looks a good deal i reckon, then again i may be a snob :p

That looks a good deal as well, 500 bucks more than 7850 but performance gain might make up for it i would need to read some reviews.

You're really misreading his post...
SLI'd GTX285s (far inferior to the 7850)
He's saying his sli 285's are inferior to a standard 7850 but he can still play games to a level that he considers to be awesome. He isn't bragging about his machine. Take your arrogance down a notch hey? The only one coming across as a snob here is you.

problem is that when you have an "adequate" machine for your needs like what droplet says then you tend to miss out one of the 2 things that games are about, which are graphics and story. besides, some games concentrate on graphics (i.e. crisis 3, BF4).

so being labeled a snob cause one doesn't "settle" for less is a bad thing? frack, call me a snob then...i'll welcome it with open arms.

OP's friend should just save a little bit longer and look out for deals, and buy in pieces.

Nope i know that but he is caling us snobs when he slid 285's which were back then top of the line if i am not mistaken thus his snob theory seems a bit ridiculous or am i mistaken?

If he bought them new, they were about 5k a pop in 2009. So that is why i asked about second hand because he is calling people snobs while he slid 285's which were top of line cards in their day :D

So i never missed anything :p

My arrogance? wait how did this go from calling us snobs to me being arrogant when he possibly bought two top of line gpu's back in 2009? That is why i asked did he buy them second hand or was he a so called snob when he bought the top of line stuff? Obviously his 2009 cards are inferior but when did he purchase them? How much did he pay for them? That will determine whether his comment was somewhat arrogant and not mine.

I bought my 6990 and 920 and it was expensive but still going strong two years later does that make me a snob for buying big knowing it will last and cost me less than upgrading mid end cards constantly? Does it make us snobs trying to ensure he doesn't buy low now and have to buy low again when we didn't know if he had any more to pump in? No it was a question we asked to better guide him so the only arrogant person i have seen in this thread is the one calling us snobs.
