To give you an idea of how poorly this guy's judgement went. This chap got R50,000 for a night in a holding cell:

Yeah this sounds about right compared to the other poor sod.
I wonder if it's the judges mood, sobriety level or bank account status or the quality of the lawyers that's the big factor, whichever it is I'm stocking up on booze and shopping for a good lawyer just in case.

Impossible to quantify reimbursement for loss of freedom - apart from all his other losses.
But I would go for R 10000 a day - all of which must come out of the Minister of Police's personal account, not from the taxpayer.

How would you manage that though? You would have crime syndicates working the system if the 'reward' for false imprisonment was that lucrative.

If the system would fail that badly with its checks and balances then the minister of police should end up behind bars him/herself.
The guy should take the R90 000, hire thugs to facilitate his move into the ministers mansion or five star hotel and lock him in a closet for 18 months while living it up on his dime.
But he probably sees the 90k as a windfall since his everyday reality is probably so close to jail anyway and thinks it's a fortune until it's stolen from him by family and friends or he drinks himself into an early grave with if due to depression.
