Good day myBBers,

Any reviews for the products RaceChip offers? What I like about them is the idea of plug and play, as well as remove it if need be. No tinkering with the actual software.

Im looking to apply this to my VW Tiguan for "fuel efficiency" ;)

Any feedback would be appreciated, or alternatives?

I think you would be better off taking it to a tuning house that specializes in this, there are quite a few around the country the last couple of years.
Have a look for a reputable house, some share their tunes and have pre developed tunes for most popular vehicles.

Random egsample, GST Motorsports

Had one on my Golf 7 GTI - no issues plug and play except for once when I had a check engine light. Unplugged the unit sent it into VW for diagnostic, got a report back "missfire cylinder 3" fault could not be reproduced, got the car back, plugged in the chip again and used the car for another 2 more years before selling it no issues, you can also have the unit reprogrammed and new harness if you change your car at a fraction of the price of buying a new unit.

Also be aware that no company will back up claims that their tune is "undetectable". Service and or motor plan will be void should the manufacturer find out.

There is no reason for "plug 'n play" if you simply wait until your service plan expires before going this route. Rather get a proper file loaded by a specialist than a generic one size fits all.

these units are specifically designed for a specific engine its not one size fits all,

I have never been a fan of P n' P type units although some of the more modern ones are far better than they were in years gone by. I have always preferred custom files done by a proper tuner who takes the time to assess the specific car and how it handles a custom file being loaded.

They are designed for a specific type of engine in a range of cars but not a specific engine in a specific car, most file tuners I know develop a file for a specific engine in a specific car.

They all have risks. even if you remove P&P, logs can show irregular fuelling, boosting etc...
I considered this route. Then rather wait for warranty and do a proper software tune with logs and retune at a reputable tuner.

The Tiguans are making good power with a proper tune, even a stage 1 will give you better performance.

Here is the problem with Plug & Play chips... you aren't upgrading any of the supporting hardware.

With a Stage 1 tune I would upgrade the intake (at the very least a high performance air filter).
Stage 2 you need to do Down Pipe and Intake. The DP is very important if you have a turbo engine. Your environmental footprint will be larger, so you can go for a high flow cat if you want to save the polar bears.

Then you start to play in the area where I am. I have a Stage 2 Hybrid. Its a stage 2 setup with a hybrid turbo so the tune is spicier.
This is a funny part of cars to get in to, and you will find lots of goodies available at Vag Cafe. Just be warned, its addictive and your tuner basically becomes your drug dealer.

i would be very nervous taking a Tiguan to stage 2 Hybrid. Unless its the 2.0T. the 1.4T gearbox will go boom when the torque goes too high.

Ok just read the OP. its diesel, not sure what gearbox it is. Either same DSG as the 110 KW 1.4T?

A stage 2 hybrid setup requires a mad scientist of a tuner. My tuner did all the ground work for his stage 2 hybrid tunes on the Alfa Romeo Giuliettas. That's why he gets my support.

But you can do anything on any car, a good tuner will know the limitations of said car and drivetrain.

And that is the fundamental point, A good tuner takes all limitations into consideration, Maybe adjusts torque peak in certain gears etc... Lots of little things thats the difference between vroom and boom
