There were fears racial tensions were mounting despite assurances from President Jacob Zuma that the majority of South Africans remain united in their support for the Constitution.

Since Eugene Terre’Blanche’s murder last week, white and black South Africans have openly criticised one another.

International media organisations have also warned soccer fans that they might be coming to a 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup caught in the middle of a racial war.

Zuma said recent events have raised concerns about social cohesion.

Terre’Blanche’s murder has been labelled as a racist attack by some and ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema has raised fears of white farmers being kicked off their land but Zuma remains optimistic.

“Some people have spoken of heightened racial tensions. Our history tells us there is no challenge we cannot overcome,” said the president.

A Groenpunt prison inmate in Vereeniging said racial tensions were prevalent.

“After this thing of Eugene Terre’Blanche, the white guys are in charge,” he said.

A black Ventersdorp woman was allegedly raped by a white farmer last week, apparently to avenge Terre’Blanche’s murder.

I wonder if the ANC reigned in Malema when he started with the kill for Zuma statements if we would be in this **** today? At least we have a backup plan if everything fails, Apartheid's fault!

I must have missed that.

And that.

i can't seem to find that anywhere.

Beyond incidents in Ventersdorp, are there racial tensions across South Africans?

things are still fine here by me, besides the AWB members taking the day off work everyone is still getting along :)

This is bull****... the media just wants to add fuel on a dying fire. I`m in the public sector and 90% of my co-workers are black. They have been as friendly towards me the last two weeks as they ever were... maybe even friendlier.

I often have to go and check on my labourers in areas filled with indigenous folk, Friday being the last time I did it. I haven't notice anything unusual other than the odd defiant stare from the usual trouble causers.

I was in the transkei during Easter break and the "locals near the town's" were a agro. towards vehicles with white occupants, I travel to the wild coast once a month so noticed straight away (waving fists in the air, acting like they are going to stone the vehicle etc)
Saw this last time in 1994 or during pre-elections mostly.

People are less likely to be confrontational face to face, than behind your back. This is pretty much true for almost all people.
You cannot expect someone in the street to call you a dubula and try and hack your head off, and when they do not claim "all is well". It is the undercurrents that one needs to be worried about - what is said in the Shebeens and pubs at night, after a few drinks.

Amongst the whites, racism is increasing - in all the areas that I know. And this is not just a case of me "hanging around with racist whites" - you can see it everywhere.

I agree.... these racial tensions are limited to the few nutjobs who are involved and the media.

The rest of us are carrying on with life as normal. There was zero racial tension at the mall on Friday night or at church last night.

On the bus home on friday a white guy stormed onto the bus shouting the k word at the driver. The driver told him apartheid is over, the guy started shouting that it shouldn't have ended. This was a full bus. The white guy then tried insulting the diver in Zulu after which the driver shouted I'm not Zulu and they started insulting each others mothers in afrikaans. Everyone else on the bus was giggling nervously.

During ET's funeral, I was in a meeting with my mining clients who are mostly White Afrikaans speaking. They could not be bothered. Media just wants to see war!
