Drag racing and indeed motorsport is not for black people. Or coloured, or Indian folk, for that matter.

Well, that is if you believe the tired and stereotypical mantras meted out by the likes of certain race officials who patrol the pitlanes and grids of South African motorsport, wishing for the days of the old democracy when us darkies knew our place in the world.

It is this kind of backward-thinking mentality that works against the good of sponsors, team owners, racing drivers, support staff, fans and would-be followers of all manner of motorsport events in this country.

If all this sounds petty or ridiculous, allow me to introduce you to a rather special individual – let’s call him Tony. A petrolhead and dedicated race official who marshals the pit lanes and start grids of drag racing and high speed events at Tarlton, ODI and other Motorsport SA -sanctioned events.

Whilst the likes of Bridgestone, BP, BMW, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Wesbank and countless others pump in millions of marketing rands into local motorsport, our man in the pits Tony conducts his own little campaign: to rid motorsport of the darker-hued spectators and even media representatives or at the very least to keep them sidelined.

These kinds of boneheads are everywhere...

As a white oke, it's awkward to say the least, but what can you do about it? At least when I'm with a black friend, they get left alone. If I wasn't there, they'd experience the same treatment.

Same as me walking into some "black" clubs- I was made to feel very unwelcome. //New SA- where did we go wrong??

true...the thing is this treatment is not one sided ie whites to non whites!!!

As soon as this mantra thinking is blown up and shown for the real truth, that MOST South Africans are still racist, towards, blacks, towards whites, towards coloureds.

Thing is, in 1994, it didn't stop, it ended for some, for others it was pay back time, for some it just went on as usual...

It will take time!

We need to not pay mind to it!

What on earth are you all on about?

Black people are not for black people either!
Duh!

:p :p :D

Rome was not built in a day, one brick/cobblestone at a time, eventually our kids will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

It is a campaign that prompts him to eject accredited (black) media from their vantage spots at a race event for reasons of “safety” only to allow the same rules to be broken if the perpetrators are pale-skinned.

And I rest my case :D

The poor dude was not allowed to go into the Pits for some or another safety reason and now he's crying Racism.... Welcome to lovely Sunny SA :D

I'm a white dude with a white car, riding on black tires on a black road. Therefore I'm a racist because I'm pressing down on the 2 black providers with my white ass car and....ass.

Morgan, I am black and I must admit that your reasoning escapes me. You quote a handful of incidents and see this as the mark of an entire sport? What? I have had incidents where racism was directed at me but at no point did I take it as an excuse to generalise. The fact is that this kind of wild generalisation betrays the same kind of racism you experienced. You had better start coming to the hard realisation that there will ALWAYS be people who will be racist and that the best you can do is to treat them with the very respect that they lack. Do not expect to live in a world where everyone, regardless of race or background, treats you the way you want to be treated. Treat these people with respect and you will notice, after a while, that even though that same race official carries on in his racist ways, he will treat you with the same respect that he gives to white people. Anger and rebelllion of the type you are voicing will get you no where and is not constructive in the least. Let us look at it this way: considering everything you just said, what would you say is the solution? More laws and rules? You think your race official will respect you then? Morgan, let us start thinking and stop reacting for a change.
